    Heritage Shorthorn Society

It always amazes me how these 'native' Shorthorns could pack such depth and width on the fine bone structure they seem to have. This was before Photoshop so is genuine! My quest is this fleshing ability. With the perceived shift from 'commodity beef' to 'niche' or 'premium brand' marketing...

Lots 112 and 113 were interesting looking heifers, did very well too. Sure you could start a good herd with them!

Saskvalley Yesterday 116Y progeny and other

My first surviving live male calf finished Phase C testing last week and I received the figures earlier this week. ADG of 4.73lbs per day over the 84 day test! This is a standardized low energy diet feeding programme, for them not to pack fat. FCR of 6.02 and a Kleiber ratio of 20.33, 112 index...

Not for this group of stock in drought, intake becomes too high, only for my young, growing animals. I give a salt/phosphate/sulphur mix with molasses to bind it during normal seasons though. Good information/advice there mbigelow, thanks. I will push the Multimin out to 6-weeks pre-calving in...

They are tiny for me! Unable to find anything on Google about the Cypermethrin either. Great November show pair there too.

Her sire is by Spry's All Gold D052. I am very excited to see how Stockman does on the All Gold progeny. Her full brother is a Gold Merit bull, they are extremely easy fleshing!

    Saskvalley Yesterday

First two Stockman calves arrived last week, due date 22 February. First one arrived Tues 30 January, second Thurs 01 February, have never had this problem before, dipped them for ticks with a Cypermethrin dip on the Monday, and gave them 5cc Multimin with Cu and Se, like I always do a month...

    Loving Shorthorns have catalog

I don't hold it against a breeder, many don't do it. I do it to differentiate my herd from the normal, sometimes wonder why I bother? Over the last four years have cut my bull selling to disposing of the bulls I have used myself, plus one or two. At three years too, they don't fall apart at that...

    Loving Shorthorns have catalog

How many people don't do that? At weaning, on WW alone, which is the better bull? The 500lbs one out of a 1000lbs cow, or the same weight one out of a 1200lbs cow? It gives great data over the years without seasonal influences, in droughts the cows and their calves are lighter, the wean weight...

Sorry, higher for me means >50, lower <50, we were not on the same page with this!

    Loving Shorthorns have catalog

Look for positive numbers, the higher the percent ranked the better! They don't fall apart as easily when conditions are sub-optimal!

Bulls look good, interesting breeding programme you have there!

Is he stout enough for you?

Without prejudice to anyone, I recall an old 'rule-of-thumb' where it is stated that a bull can be bred to as many cows as is his age in months, after the age of 18 months, provided he gets sufficient supplementation to at least hold his condition during the breeding season. For this very reason...
