    cow/calf not thriving....suggestions welcome

Sounds like you’re doing everything right. My first guess from that description would be that the cow might have hardware. Could you or your vet give her a magnet?

    Polled or horned

Full disclosure: I raise Polled Herefords. In most commercial and purebred herds that use horned bulls the first thing they do at birth is dehorn the calf- why not do that naturally and have one less job to do? As long as you like the homo polled bull it’s money well spent as far as I’m concerned.

    how do i twine legs?

I can’t answer your question but I can tell from your posts that you’re young and enthusiastic which is great. I think it would be beneficial for you to try find a mentor to answer some of your questions and provide advice as you need it. If you share your location maybe someone on here could...

My Herford Steer will not budge! Please Help!

Assuming he’s quiet and tie broke but just stubborn: Tie him low in a nice spot with hay. After five or six hours try lead him to water. If he won’t go try again in a few hours. If he still won’t go leave him tied (in a nice spot where he can lay down) overnight and then try again in the...

    Cow Calf

The calf needs to stay on the cow to keep her milking. Feed them separately so the cow doesn’t eat all the feed and leave the calf with none. Practice working with them both together and apart so they learn to stay content even when they aren’t beside each other. Good luck, pairs are impressive...

    This Springs Excepted

I was researching Outcross and found this. I know it’s an old post but how did this heifer turn out for you? I have an Outcross heifer that’s only 2.5 months old but I’m pretty excited about her.

Garlic in mineral for fly control?

Quite a few people in our area started using mineral with garlic in it last summer and from what I’ve heard they seemed happy. We’re hoping the company we use will add it to their tubs so we can try it out. Last year the flies were unbelievably bad.

    Heifer Calf

I try not to get excited about baby calves but this one might be fun to watch. These pictures were taken 12 days apart- at 10 hours old and today. JDH 4X Ultimate 263Z 94B X MBF 121C Charlotte 321E.

    Major Show - Hair problem

That’s no fun, but lice does happen, and sometimes really fast!! A picture would help us understand how bad it is. I’d clip her (don’t slick her) and paint the patches at home so you know exactly how it’ll look at the show. It’s great that you want to help the student decide but at the end of...

    Monopoly Money/ I-80 steer

Nice steer, it looks like you’re doing a really good job with him! When you show him you’ll want him set up like he is in the second picture- when his hind legs are stretched (first picture) it makes his tailhead look quite high and when his head is too high (third picture) it makes him look...

Where have all the readers/posters gone?

I’ve been on here for a few years and I do read fairly often but I rarely post anymore for a few reasons: 1) I have a lot less questions than I did a few years back. 2) I have very little interest in Shorthorn cattle. 3) I have no interest in people bashing other people. 4) Most of the threads...

Would you sell a steer with a white eye (pink eye)?

I agree. I can’t imagine a judge commenting on it and I think if they did it would only be because they ran out of things to say.

    For my fellow Hereford fans!

Thanks! You must have read my mind because that’s my exact plan. Paying bills is no fun but buying heifers sure is! Haha

    For my fellow Hereford fans!

I thought I’d update this post for anyone following along. Below are updated pictures of 49D as a two year old, her maternal sister 6E as a yearling and their little brother 53F at 5.5 months old (53F is on the next page). I bought their mother for well below the sale average but it’s safe...

    Hauling show cattle long distance

When I was taking cattle to our junior nationals the longest haul we did was 44 hours of driving with two 8-12 hour stops and then four full days to rest. We always hauled them tied loosely so they could lay down and eat hay but not move around too much. We put down a lot of bedding in the...
