    Replacing a Switch?

Thanks for the info cowboy_nyk! I also have a friend who is a hairdresser and I'm going to see if I can convince her to put extensions in instead... I can't wait to see the look on her face when I request that but she's a pretty good sport so it's worth a shot.

    Replacing a Switch?

LLBUX: Thanks but I don't live in Illinois. I have checked the rules of the shows I will be attending (Lloydminster Stockade Roundup in Alberta/Saskatchewan and Canadian Western Agribition in Saskatchewan) and I wouldn't be breaking any rules by adding a tail switch.

    Replacing a Switch?

I just wanted to bump up this post and see if anyone had figured out how to attach the dead tail switches. I will be showing a heifer who froze her tail switch and tonight I'm going to pick up a few dead tail switches to practice with. Cowboy_nyk  did leaving the skin tab work? I've heard that...

    Deformed Mature Steer Pictures

I read through the comments and a few other people suggested DD. You were right about him being a steer- see the Facebook comment attached as a photo.

    Deformed Mature Steer Pictures

A friend shared this post on Facebook- see the link for the full post. https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=878724468870045&set=pcb.443917109066285&type=1&theater It's very cool- anyone know what this is called? What's also strange is that the animal has a cow head and a bull body...

    Maggots in a castration site

I really appreciate the comments, they seem to have helped! The maggots are gone and it looks like it's healing well. This steer calf wins the disposition of the year award- he lays in the barn and chews his cud while I lift up his leg and check out the wound. Cowman 52- I found some old "blue...

    Maggots in a castration site

We banded a late March bull calf two weeks ago and two days ago I found maggots in the open wound where his testicles meet his twist. He's been Cylenced regularly all summer but I covered his body in fly spray to keep the flies off of him and for the past two nights I've been rinsing out the...

    Western Water Hemlock

Thank you for the comment idalee. I'm sorry that you had some deaths from it but it does make me feel better knowing that you only had problems in the early spring. Everything that I've read suggests that I won't have any problems putting cows on the pasture now but I feel safer hearing it from...

    Western Water Hemlock

Does anyone have experience grazing cattle on land with Western Water Hemlock? Due to the drought in Alberta we are very short on pasture and we have a piece of land that we just fenced off and are planning to use but it's full of Hemlock. In school they said that as long as you pick what you...

    Sold two heifers this weekend

Thanks Cowboy, I agree. I had never met the family before I sold them the calves but they seem really great.  The darker heifer with all the white is what I consider  a "starter" heifer- the kind that get kids interested in cattle. She's as quiet as they come and she is a decent calf but she'll...

    Sold two heifers this weekend

The kids have never owned heifers and the steers that they bought last year came straight off pasture so their dad was worried that these heifers might not come for feed (they have a small horse pasture that the heifers will be on until the winter when they get put in a corral). I assured him...

    Sold two heifers this weekend

This weekend I sold two heifer calves to two young 4-H members. I'm really excited to see how the heifers turn out for them! The boy was busy catching grasshoppers so he didn't have much to say about his heifer but when his sister met her heifer she said "She's so quiet and has such nice hair...

    bloat and rumensin crc bolus

We tried the rumensin bloat boluses on chronic bloaters before and they worked so well. I can't remember the name but we just asked for "rumensin bloat boluses" at our local vet and they ordered them for us. They have huge plastic wings on them and you need to buy the applicator too but they...

Thanks for the response, JTM. Today he at least sniffed it a bit while his buddy was eating. Hopefully he'll come around and decide to try it sooner rather than later.
