    calf uninterested in feed

I have a bull calf this year that's driving me crazy! I've tried for over a month to start him on feed but he's 100% uninterested. My other three calves love it and he comes running into the barn with them but then he just lays down- he won't even smell it! I've tried both a show ration and...

    Couple photos of the girls

Thanks Cowboy_nyk, I am proud of them. I'll be the first one to say that I really wish they were more consistent. That being said, I'm learning everyday so I think over time I'll have a better idea of exactly what type of cows I want my herd to be made up of. You Tube has done a lot of good for...

    Show or not to Show?

I wouldn't say that it's something I worry about but I am very aware that it could happen. I think it all comes down to experience- as a young breeder I strive to make sure that my heifers are at 12 o'clock for the show but sometimes the line between show ready and too fat gets a little blurry...

    Show Heifer Help

All of the above is good advice. I'd also add that if you have another heifer/steer that she's used to that you could stall with her that might help make her feel more relaxed.

    Show Coat

Thanks RedChuck, I've seen Chris Wilson's facebook posts and know about genetics and hard work but I would still like to know what people (who don't sell the product) are saying about it.

I wanted to bump this post up as I am also curious about Show Coat. Any new opinions and does anyone know if suppliers carry it in Canada?

    Calf with kicking problem...

I have a friend whose steer got stung by a bee right near his flank. It's a good thing he only had one more show to go to because that steer would kick your head off if you went anywhere near that spot. I would try the broom idea that SlickTxMaine recommended- touching him with a showstick all...

    New to all of this

I agree with CAB, if you post this to The Big Show more people will see it. Adding pictures of your females will get even better results. I do not breed clubbies or crossbreds so I can't answer your questions but good luck and welcome to SteerPanet :)

Young calf - Has anyone ever seen this before? What do you think it is?

Glad to see that everything turned out well. He looks like he'll make an awesome show steer!!

What are the best genetic and non-genetic decisions that you've implemented?

I saw this question posted on a different site and it had some really informative responses so I thought I'd ask it on here.

    My First Ever Bull Purchase

Thank you for the positive comments! Mark- He's got a big one ;) Frostback- Some guys don't like it if they have a red crest but as XBAR said, recently a lot of guys have been starting to push away from feathernecks. I'm indifferent on if they have a feather or not but I'd much rather have a...

    Clipping Herefords...

What I do with my Herefords is shear out his body at least 2 months before but leave the legs, belly and tailhead. I work the hair daily to train it and then clip them and blend the legs, belly and tailhead right before the show. That routine will get the hair looking fresh but still well trained.
