What makes a good Jackpot ?

Here is a Jackpot in Ada, OK that I've worked with several years. We added a $1000 scholarship last year Exhibitors must be an active member of an active FFA or 4-H Chapter, located in one of the following 24 Oklahoma Counties: Atoka Bryan Carter Choctaw Cleveland Coal Garvin Haskell Hughes...

Keeping condition on cattle during shows

Lots of good advice above.  Cattle are creatures of habit. Go to more shows, and the calves will adjust quickly. Just my opinion. I don't wish to offend anyone with the statement below.  For the time and money involved, why would anyone attend only 2 - 4 shows a year?

    Steer feed

I think you could build many suitable rations with what you have, and do well to hold your steer by feeding 2% of body weight daily. Play with 10 - 13lbs per day and weigh often to estimate where he will be in Jan.

    Maine bulls

Back in the mid to late 90s we were using Polleroid quite extensively to add frame, bone and style. I will add that most of the cows bred to Polleroid were heavily influenced by Magic, possibly the best Cow maker of the Maine-Anjou breed.  As a matter of fact, we showed a Polleroid X Magic ...

what mineral do you feed your show calves?

I always Top Dressed the mineral for each show calf to be sure they got it. Use Mineral blocks for the cows: not salt blocks, but 100% mineral block.

    clipping and fitting fees

Sizzler14, I believe you missed a few words in my post. I did not give a timeline on how long it may take to master Clipping/Fitting. Everyone is gifted, but we are certainly not all the same. We started in Show Caves from scratch, purchasing 2bred cows. We had never been around calves, but had...

    AAOK Ration question

Just reach out to all SP members, and I'm sure you will get a qualified answer. I have visited via telephone with well over 100 members about modifications to our ration. I know for a fact there are several on SP who have successfully substituted both shredded & pelleted Beet Pulp.  Good Luck!

    clipping and fitting fees

Tallcool1, great post!  That's where I was heading, but got tied up and didn't get time to post. Your analogy to coaching and tutoring is exactly how the knowledge and skills of Clipping/fitting and daily grooming should progress, but many of us who started in the sport of Show Cattle neither...

    clipping and fitting fees

Just my opinion, but if our family couldn't do the job (Sports, Livestock, Academics, etc), we would not participate. Clipping & Fitting is not that hard to master. All it takes is patience and imagination. Winning a big show with a Calf you bred and fit is SO MUCH MORE rewarding! And...

    Another Feed Program Question...

Don't know your time schedule, but please know that ANY change in feed will take a week to 10 days for your calf to adjust. I would never change a ration within 30 days of a show, and 60 days would be better. And, get this:I agree with XBAR.
