    Leasing a bull

obie - just keep in mind if you lease a bull and then have it returned, you are risking spreading disease into your herd.  Also, keep in mind that trich has become a real HUGE issue and once your herd has it, it is a long road back.  You can trich test the return bull, but it will have to be...

    Recipient Conception Problems

Over the course of many years, I have come to the conclusion that some embryos from certain cows just do not "take".  I have also realized that some cow give embryos that stick with most certainty.  I really can't explain the science behind it, but have found it to be true.  Just like some cows...

    AHL Kodiak

Maybe the shorthorn breeder used the famous "Chi wand" and changed it to a "shortie wand" and WHAM!  Introducing a registered shorthorn.  (clapping)

Market price vs. Purebred Sales price

The shorthorn breed is suffering everywhere.  Suffering from over priced heifers that do not breed. Suffering from animals that are so big they require a feed wagon instead of a feed bucket. Suffering from high birth weights that kill cows. Suffering from a few egotistical breeders that have...

    What's the deal with clones?

When cloning, no genes are "turned on and off".  The DNA is simply (ok, probably not simply) transferred from one embryo into another.  There is a bit of chromosomal material left in the "recep egg" If you know of any identical twins (where the egg split inside the uterus) they are clones of...

    Birth defect? Graphic image warning

You do not mention bloodlines, but it looks like a 5 month fetus that has been mummified and then aborted, possible monkey mouth defect, which is found mainly, but not exclusively in club calf bloodlines. Keep in mind, with it being mummified, it has been in the cow for quite some time (3-5...

    Scours in calves

Corona virus, roto virus, ecoli and milk scours. Some are harder to treat than others. Some kill quicker than others.  Best prevention is a nice clean DRY place to calve; preferably green pasture! There are lots of "treatments"- the most important is to keep the calf hydrated with...

    Twins/Bigger calves

26 calves so far. Average of 79 pounds - High of 90; low of 60 Average of 5 days late - Range of 9 days late; 3 months early (Something wrong there!!  (clapping)) Also had 2 late term abortions. Feeding wheatlage, alfalfa mixed hay (1st cutting)

    Semen Sales

Dealing with the public is not easy.  Every year during this time I shutter at the number of phone calls I get selling bulls.  They lead with "How much are they"  then follow with "How many do you have" then "What are they out of"  then "What is birth weight."  I have often wanted to say...

    hormones in beef

Hidden Creek - I did, but of course she didn't believe me. knabe - Of course I told her of the artificial sweeteners, artificial coloring and flavoring, but again, that didn't seem to concern her. x-bar - my point being that everything has the ability to kill or shorten the life of a human...

    hormones in beef

Very nice student investigation.  Glad to see our youth can actually think for themselves! x-bar - If I added up every "risk" of cancer and death in my lifestyle, I should have been dead years ago. Probably should not have even been born.  I had a discussion with a lady about how ag practices...

    CA, CDC, polio

And to ask a similar question CAB, How does sir loin explain the calves that get polio type symptoms that do NOT get fed DDG's?  Example: Last year, I had a 10 week old calf that went down suddenly and had polio symptoms (Down, stretched neck, blindness, grinding teeth).  Vet came out and used...

Leasing programs for club calves - for kids

Lets analyze this: The guy (lets call him Fred) has lived through his son via the show ring. Now that his son is too old, he has found another kid (lets call him Sam) who "wants to run with the big dogs" but apparently doesn't have the money to run the race.  Sam's parents do not support showing...

    Champoin, Reserve, Third Overall...

I like this practice, but also find that we might be going down the slippery slope of "everyone's a winner".  God I hate that.

Leasing programs for club calves - for kids

Keep in mind if the heifer is registered, the heifer will have to be transferred into the youths name, thus transferring ownership. If the heifer does not come back, it will be hard and a long legal battle, to get the heifer returned. This practice goes on "unofficially" darn near everywhere...

Article:Is the Angus Breed on the Right Course? A Marc Update

One of the best articles ever written. I had not seen this when I commented on the "why cow numbers are down" thread.  But makes me feel good that an "expert" agrees with me. This article is also the reason there is a "riff" in the red angus breed about showing. The showing ring breeders have...

Lowest US cow/heifer inventory since 1941.

Actually, if you deal in percentages and not absolute numbers, black angus is losing ground FAST on the cattle population. Low numbers can be attributed to:   1. Bad press - from both inside and outside of the beef industry.   2. International issues - GMO/organic issues, Brazil, mexico...

    <party> That's pretty funny!

    Perfect Storm (Red Angus)..

Not many offspring unless you go to tree lane.  Which would lead me to believe he was either a "sleeper" or they have "protected" him by using him on a select group of cows to get "great" offspring. Nothing wrong with either management system, but he is a 2009 bull, so should have been breeding...

    CA, CDC, polio

I have ask you politely to tell us your real name and the lawsuit and what it involves.  Since "polite" didn't work, I will try this: Either tell us your real name, agenda, and the lawsuit OR SHUT THE HE** UP. (I know you have an agenda and a lawsuit; I am kind of good at sniffing those out!)...
