I am showing my ignorance here, but I just have to ask...I showed (mostly heifers) in the 80's and early 90's. For every show that we attended, there was a Champion and Reserve Champion.
My kids are now getting into showing. I have heard others claiming to be winners of Third, Fourth, and Fifth Overall (Breeding Heifer and Market Steer). I am not familiar with this. How are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th placings determined? Is it just based on showring performance? Does the judge pick a Champion, a Reserve, then a third calf, a fourth calf, and finally a fifth calf? Or do other variables come into play...such as rate-of-gain, etc?
Also...for shows that have both MARKET and FEEDER steer divisions...I assume that this is the same as PROGRESS and PROSPECT divisions?
