    Brain Storming Help Needed

It is kind of upsetting that he didn't give me any direction, but I must say I wasn't too surprised.  I thought about going very basic, but at the same time something I can tie to both horses and cattle.  I believe I could put something together on basic nutrition.  Possibly show them how...

    Brain Storming Help Needed

So I have been asked to give a presentation tonight to a 4-H club.  Unfortunately the leader of the club gave me no direction even when I asked for it.  In his words "oh you'll figure something out". So does anyone have any ideas for a topic to present.  My audience is apparently about 10 kids...

    Hot Spot

I know of a red heifer out of him.  Lots of chrome.  A ton of depth, nice width.  A little on the short side.  I dont know if this runs with Hot Spot or not, but this particular heifer is extremely flighty almost to the point of being hot.  She is on high alert all the time.

    Newbie Question

The one standing is almost certainly not bred.  The other ones could be reacting to the third.  If you dont see them stand, and they are simply jumping, they could very well be bred.  The one standing however is a different story.

    Bull to heifer Ratio

The heifer born last Thursday broke the streak of 13 straight bulls.

    Birth weight question

Update: So I was able to coax the cow out of the calving pen on Friday night.  (about 24 hours after the calf was born).  The cow had a little less attitude after 24 hours.  Was able to weigh and tag the calf. The heifer calf tipped the scales at 98.  I really didn't think she was that big.

    Retained placenta

So I have a first calf heifer who I don't believe has passed a placenta as of yet.  She calved last night at around 8:45.  When do I start worrying about it?  What sort of treatment? Any thoughts would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

    Gestation Length

i don't think it is wrong to get worked up about gestations lengths at all.  While I agree with you it is best to simply let nature take its course, you have so much time, energy, emotion and even money tied up in the cattle it is hard not to get nervous.  It is like the night before Christmas. ...

    Birth weight question

Another stupid question, but if you don't know how else will you learn. So I had the first calf of the season last night to a first calf heifer.  The heifer is a great mother so far, probably a little too good.  I went to weigh the calf last night, and the heifer has no intention of letting me...

Lets see A Meyer 734 crossed with an angus cow crossed with a clubby bull. Yeah that might work.  ;D

    Nose Rings

Is that something your vet normally does, or do you do it yourself.

    Take a check?

So this is kind of cattle related, but maybe not entirely. I have a situation where I have been trying to sell a young horse for quite some time.  I have listed him on a couple of different sales sites.  Last night I got a call from a guy that lives about 6 hours away from me.  He might come...

County Fair thoughts- Maines and Mainetainers?

So my county fair is like many and it is set up a little odd. Due to numbers we have three breeds that show.  Angus, Herfs, AOB, and a market heifer class.  This leads to some interesting AOB classes where we have had Gerts show against Simmentals, however that is the way it is very little...

Needed plans to build some stuff.

If you go to the description on Sullivan's website they give you all the measurements at least for the dividers. http://www.sullivansupply.com/Iowa/detail.aspx?ID=12198

    Calf Slings...

Is the pole you have hinged or do you have it hinged?  So that it has a lever affect?

    Calf Slings...

It does a pretty good job of supporting the calf and lifting them up.  When you keep the rings together and if is directly over their mid section it is pretty hard for them to slip out. As red said the hardest thing is lifting it, especially if it a big boy.  Dead lifting a 100 pounds using...

4 days overdue.... What should I due?

It is easy to get antsy, and certainly justified.  I am a nervous wreck when I have heifers calving. For some reason, myself included we sometimes recognize gestation length as a constant.  There are a lot of variables that go into it.  Do a google search on gestation length of a cow.  You will...
