    Showring tricks

I guess with as many kids that read this forum, I would rather see the post move towards what can a good showman do with an average calf to out show someone. With all the negativity that gets thrown at show cattle industry, I think its always better to try to present it in a better light. Most...

    Red White and Roan Heifer

Really like the body of this heifer. Nice job capturing her in her element. I am looking at her general structure she looks sound and has some bone. Clean fronted. very eye appealing gal. great back ground makes her color pop.

    Opinions on our calves

I don't think your pictures are a fair representation of the calves. The haltered pictures the calves look uncomfortable positioned or appear to be. If you want to capture photos create a small area or sit on a bucket or your 4 wheeler while in pasture. Candid photos are really hard to get. The...

    Dose creep feeding pay

SOunds like your ration to me. I don't always use molasses in the summer because it sometimes is too sweet. Calf manna usually enough to capture the smell. I also use cherry oil. Past 10 years we have done creep and never had an issue. But is put out on day one when we start calving. By summer...

    On line sales problems

I had the same trouble with an online sale. I purchased in February with intentions of using it in April and May. The semen finally after many many excuses came in July. I had already used other semen. Was told not to worry about shipping charges due to the inconvenience. To this day I get a...

    Fence height?

I have barb for large spans of pasture. Woods etc. Lots close to the barns I put panel fence up. When we go to separate calves, I have had them try to run through barb. Panel fence they just bounce back. We use 6" treated wood post every second one and 2 steel post. We used 60" panel with a...

    Dose creep feeding pay

Our operation is not commercial. I sold all my steer calves by May 31st this year. Creep is out from day one. They will be weaned ready to leave in July. If you are targeting the show cattle market it is the best advantage you can give your calves. I am not sure when the last time anyone got...

    show question

AOB in our area- all other breed animals. Small registries that don't have big classes. Commercial show in crossbreds. So for a while, people showed foundation Simmi 25% in the AOB division, because they only had purebred classes or 50% or greater. Same with some shorthorn plus shows, they...

    Dose creep feeding pay

ABSOLUTELY! Depends on what industry you in, we put creep out as soon as they start hitting the ground. Most of my calves are sold in May. same families come to see them and make purchase decision. We don't push them we get them started and it makes it much easier when weaning. Gives us gains on...

    back legs on calf

I have seen calves with systemic infection from navel infection. It settles in their joints for some reason. There use to be a protocol for treating it. As far as his composition- the more you concentrate your genetics some animals may display certain traits you may find undesirable others may...

question about rinsing a calf after banding?

We cut our calves. Usually rinse blood etc off the day of castration leave them rest a day and then start light rinsing. They seem to actually like it in this warm weather plus it keeps the flys away and makes them more comfortable. I can't see how banding would be any more traumatic.

Need help with cow with no milk!!

I had an ex show heifer calve this year. she had colostrum and never produced milk. Vet evaluated her, said at some point if she was too fat or nursed on as a heifer she could have acquired heifer mastitis. It was good she had colostrum but didn't continue to produce milk. he said that the next...

    Showing registered vs nonregisterable cattle?

We register for birthdate not show date. I have mainetainers and shorthorns primarily. I think registering calves at some shows gives a calf little advantage to get to the final drive against crossbreds. If the judge truely evaluates them on breed and current condition. I find it funny when i...

    Calves

Some of our best females for making both steers and replacements have been half shorthorn half simmi. I have four generations of Simmi Angus line in our herd they stick every year and always have a marketable calf. When I take candid shots, first remember that beauty is in the eye of the...

Show steers Feeding Hay - Hand Feed or Round bale free for all

We have always fed free choice hay and not round bale feeder. Calves were only over weight only a couple times, I wasn't paying close attention to the kids projects we over shot the market. I found it helps them belly down. Ours clean up their ration and eat hay as well. As Tall said below, if...
