    Support Your Truck!!!!

Cummins=Dodge.  I drove the Chevy before buying the Dodge.  Availability of a standard transmission was a factor as well.  Two Chevy dealers tried to sell me a truck decked out like a Cadillac.  Went to the Dodge dealer and they understood that I wanted to buy a truck, not a tricked out toy.

    Dairy buyout

I think RW may be right because as I understand the new program this buy out plan only affects individual cows and not the owners.  The buy out back in the late 80's or early 90's took the cows to slaughter and prevented the owner from entering back into dairy farming for a set period of time...

    Special prayer/thought request

At the end of March I am going to Haiti on a short term mission trip.  I am part of a 20 person praise, worship and evangilism team that is spending a full week dedicating a new church.  We will be doing "door to door" calling on homes during the day and leading worship services at the new...

THIS is what sportsmanship is about

What amazes me is when you do the right thing, some people think you some kind of alterior motive.  Some people are so used to being taken advantage of they don't trust anyone.  Sad but rue.

Breeding a 7 year old shorthorn plus cow

Looking for input on how to breed a 7 year old shorthorn cross cow.  She is a Double Stuff daughter and we have not had her tested for TH or PHA because she is yet to have heifer calf!!  Was thinking that for this year we would consider using Smooth Criminal in an effort to enhance the Irish...

Jakes Proud Jazz X 10 Queens calf

We have a couple of shorthorn plus heifer out a Fear Factor son that I am thinking we will breed to JPJ.  Any opinions from others about that would be helpful.

    Shorthorn muscle?

What protein % is the grain that you are feeding.  Once a calf gets to 850# at our place they will not see anything higher than 12%.  Betting him filled out (fatter) will help.  If you get enough hair on him you can do some things with clipping that will help emphasize the muscle that you have. ...

    pet peeves!

People who empty their ash trays in store parking lots and not their own driveway. People with seats at the rear of the plane that put their carry on items in overhead compartments at the front of the plane and then race to get there when the plane arrives at the gate. Anyone driving and using a...

2009 Ohio Beef Expo Maine sale

Does anyone know when the Shorthorn sale catalog will be available?

    What to breed her to?

Much depends upon what you are looking for out of the calf.  For us with a virgin the big key is alive, calf and momma.  Since she already has some Angus in there that would be a good way to go.  Otherwise, take a look at some Maine breeding, Gigolo Joe, Ali (if you can get some.  We have had...

Bought a used semen tank, what came with it

The cane code that the previous owner told me was the bull "Caufi" is 16SM71 if that helps. Zach, not sure what you mean.  Are you referring to the cane code that I haven't been able to identify?

Bought a used semen tank, what came with it

I purchased a used semen tank and got the semen that was in the tank as part of the deal.  Tank is in great shape but haven't been able to find out much about the bulls that are "in the tank".  Here is a listing of the semen that I know is the tank and the cane code for one I am unsure of...

    Favorite Christmas Song?

I am with the group that like Mary Did You Know, but I am partial to the arrangements done by the Gaither Vocal Band.  Also like "Come Make a Place" as performed by Ernie Haas and Signature Sound.  I sing in a gospel quartet and we just sang both for a Christmas concert. As far as traditional...

Who to breed a WMW cow to?

I agree with Vet Tech on the White Boy suggestion.  We have a WMW daughter that we tried that with this year.  Will know when the calf hits the ground if it took or if the clean up got her.  Had a heifer in May out of a Black Impact female with White Boy and I think she is going to be pretty...

GAS $2.33 Can you believe it

Across the state line in PA gas is 2.98 and diesel is 3.69!!!

    What do you say?

Around here most people refer to a soft drink as "pop".  The creek is actually a "crick".  Some of my PA friends don't have a mom she is "mum", and they refer to your family as you'ns (pronounced you-ins).  Most of the corn here is chopped (silage) or simple picked.  Beans and hay are cut, oats...

    Regional foods

Hot chicken wings, beef on wick (cummelwick rolls), deep fried haddock, fried bologna sandwiches, all of which are "local favorites.  My grandmother was from Arkansas so I grew up with hog jowls and black eyed peas for New Years Day, southern fried chicken, liver and onions, Swiss steak for...
