    2008-09 Model Steers-First Outing

It was a very small jackpot show, the red and white stood Grand Overall and the black stood as Reserve Grand Overall both coming from the same class.  Youngest boy also won a buckle as Breed Champion with his Brangus heifer.

    Describe yourself in cattle terms!

Large framed bull with long spine, that has been removed from production.  Monogamous minded cow only allows him to look at new heifers from the hilltop and stay in his very well fenced pasture.

    Other people's

We have done it a couple of ways, pay for everything in exchange for first calf.  This year breeder pays for all we keep rewards, if some one offers to purchase her above his base price we sell and keep the difference.  This must cleared up first meeting and clarify expectations.

    Cool Room Questions

We run ours at 45-50 degrees for steers. Leave them in from dawn to dark, and work hair and stick work in the evening. We have 1 static exhaust port, same as on a household drier.  A fresh air fan is set to run on a timer for 30secs. every 3 mins. We tie ours so they can lay down to rest. Our...

    Texas shows

We are hitting a jackpot show this weekend with heifers, steers and goats.  Buckles awarded for each breed champion, champion prospect steer and champion goat.  Should be fun starting over with new animals to see how they handle the ring.

    Gardening

We have 25 acres of watermelons this year, and they will be expensive this year with the cost of commercial fertilizer at $525/ton.  The boys make some good money off of the culls that they sell in front of the house, and use to supplement their show addictions.

18 days till show day - Steer gone wild!!!

Sometimes this does backfire.  We let our heifers out every night to exercise and they really enjoy it.  This caused my oldest son a problem at Houston this year, his heifer had been tied out for four nights without her romp.  When she hit the huge arena there she went nuts and made a long...

    Selling my soul

I have enjoyed this site more than you can imagine, the main reason is because so many do bare their soul's either intentionally or not.  It is easy to say or do things when not looking eye to eye with another, it is human nature and the reason we are of a sinful nature.  I am as guilty as any...

    Spring Fishing

We have a place on lake Sam Rayburn about 10 minutes from our sawmill that is the back waters of the Angelina River, we have out lines and are tearing the catfish up.  We mainly catch blues but have caught four flatheads or Ops as we call them.  My father-in-law fishes Toledo Bend and averages...

    A little gun history

In Texas there are basically two types of hunters.  Those that hunt because it has been a family tradition, enjoy the fellowship with family and friends in hope of killing a respectable buck.  The other is the financially loaded trophy hunter that cares nothing more than a Boone and Crockett...

    A little gun history

Amen, Chambero!  I received the same nasty phone calls and letters on behave of LaPierre (Sp.) that really turned me off.  Thanks again for allowing my youngest and myself to share a stand with you for two enjoyable hunts.  You have to bring those boys down the catfish are in high gear.

    Do cattle have sensitivity feelings?

Yesterday my oldest son participated in a local livestock judging contest at the local university who purchased our show steers.  They had the Shorthorn located in a barn with a window in front of him.  As my son walked by the calf recognizes him among all of the kids and starts bellowing at the...

    A little gun history

My wife and I are both licensed concealed handgun carriers, our boys are members of the 4-H shooting team and avid hunters.  Guns are a big part of our life and recreation time, and are respected for their capabilities for causing harm if mishandled.  The numbers posted in the article are...

    County Steer Show Pictures

Nacogdoches, TX. Pineywood region of East Texas.  A normal year for our county show will have 70 to 75 head of steers with the top 55 making the premium sale, the student then retains ownership and resales at market price or what ever they choose.  Stephen F. Austin State University purchased...

    County Steer Show Pictures

ZNT, Our county has a hard time making change on going to slick shear, or changing the date of show to an earlier date.  We finally did away with the maximum weight limit in August for the upcoming year.  Last year you could not weigh-in over 700 lbs. on August 23, the Simmi weighed 680 lbs. and...

Thanks Red, the boys really worked their tails off on their calves.  I was proud of them for their efforts, the oldest finished 2nd as a 14 yr. old in Sr. Showmanship out of 25.  The youngest finished 3rd out of 15 in Jr. Showmanship as a 11 yr. old, the trips to the major shows really helped...

manure in streams vs industry waste

Fortunately we own 90% of the land around our mill, and our closest emission point to neighboring property is 1500 ft.  The yard dust is what aggravates me, we are required to water if the good Lord does not do it for us.  Red tape and hoops, both go well with a circus.
