    Halter breaking.

I get it.  Was concerned an inexperienced person might read the post and go tie up their new calf with one -- might not be a pretty site if a calf set back and cut his own head off.

    Halter breaking.

I can't imagine using a cable halter on a calf that doesn't know how to lead and definitely not tying one up with a cable halter.  Can you give more info on how you are using it on these calves.  Would hate to see someone tie up a green calf with a cable halter and cut off it's head.

    county fair

Priorities get bent and twisted by peer pressure.  We always explained to coaches that the chances of obtaining a livestock judging or academic scholarship were much higher than any athletic scholarship and then did our thing.  They didn't like it and threatened we wouldn't be starters.  It was...

    county fair

They would probably be as good at math as they are at sports. Somebody showed up for county fair.  How did they make it to fair in the face of all these sports schedules?

    Oversized switch plates.

I think I have spilled 10x as much gas with the new EPA gas can spout that any of my old ones.  They do suck.  I also put the yellow plastic air vents in all my cans, even the EPA one and they pour much better.

I don't know why you are going on about dogs and lollipops.  ::) This is a cattle site.  Do you like to eat beef?

    feedlot rations by decade

Biggest difference might be availability and use of distillers grains in more recent years.  Otherwise, hay, corn and silage have been run through mixer wagons for decades.

Yup. Really. Research photoperiod and hair growth.  No shortcuts.  Not every solution is in pill form.

    Weight gain

Research the board, but some general things to keep in mind are to feed twice a day, same time every day.  Manage your bunk -- give him 30 minutes to eat and then clean up any feed that is left after that amount of time.  Tie him in a barn under fans during the day.  In the evening, let him out...

    Electronic Heat Detection Systems

I prefer a 7-day CIDR protocol and PG shot and Estrotect patches.  I start watching the next day, but really nothing has ever stood before 36-48 hours and I do not recall any cow ever done standing by 48 hours.  54-72 hours and up to 84 hours is the prime time, so just schedule to be in to work...

Poll Qustion - Top 10 Best Current Club Calf Bulls

On THC cows, I have had some success with Business Done Right and Lovin the Business.  Not sure if they were carriers, but the few we had were good haired.  Had a Lovin 620 out of an Unstoppable cow that looked really cool up til about 120 days old, but by 6 months old was just too tight...

    Question for Canadians

For a Cobett, if your pipeline is already in place, just dig down to the bottom of the incoming trench.  If your line is at 6' you will likely need an insulated extension tube plus the noninsulated bottom tube.  If your line is deeper, then will probably need the second insulated tube.  Cobett...

    Question for Canadians

Second the Cobett drinkers.  I have them at the pens (small ones) and in the pasture (large ones).  You do have to pop the ice out in the mornings if it has been below say 15 degrees over night, but it is really easy -- never more than an inch or so of ice.  They are easy to install and do not...

    Ringworm Around Heifers Eye

I have scuffed it off and treated with Clorox and iodine solution,  separately and together.  Seemed that suffocating it with oil or grease worked as well as scraping and bleach.  Some cases have been easy to kill and other cases took 6 weeks to clear up.  MTG may not kill it, but it helps the...
