    Rat Tails...

I think most of those calves have short tails because of cold weather or injury. Of all of them in online fall sales from northern breeders, I haven't seen any that show rat tail characteristics. They usually have little to no hair on their bodies and are considered very hard doing animals that...

    solid gold

Thanks for the replies rackranch and Possum Trot. I will look into both suggestions. I should have added that maternal traits passed to heifers would trump killer steer prospects for us. A heifer would stand a chance of sticking around if she has all the parts. A bull calf would be cut and maybe...

    solid gold

Not to derail things here, but what would you use for second calver Solid Gold daughter? She is out of a Dr. Who daughter, and is wide, soggy, moderate framed, and clean fronted. She could use some femininity and a touch more set to her hock. Also, she is a nice blonde color like her sire. She...

I want to see your pictures!!

Are you looking for ideas for all weather indoor type or just mainly spring/summer/fall washing? We have a very simple set up, but it works for the horses, goats, calves, heifers, mature bulls, etc. It is just a large pen under a south facing lean-to (about 20x 10 feet). Concrete nonslip floor...

    Congrats Windy Pine Cattle Co!

That's great! I just wanted you guys to know (if you didn't already) how proud everyone in my family is of you and yours! You have certainly come a long way in a short time. Congrats again and hopefully we will run into you at the fall expos.

    wi state fair steer show

It is a terminal show. The ones that make the auction often get bought by larger businesses/ groups from the southern part of the state. Years ago, most of the resulting beef was donated to shelters and charities in the Milwaukee and Madison areas. Not sure if this is still the case though.

    Congrats Windy Pine Cattle Co!

The kid is a fair hand at fitting for such a young one too! Thought this was a neat pic of him getting at it!

    Indiana Steer Show

Some of the blogs showed the steer being loaded into a trailer and featured a touching note about her steer/friend from the young lady last week. Guessing his target was already met????

    Congrats Windy Pine Cattle Co!

I'm not sure exactly what his pedigree is. I think the dam is an Angus cow they own and probably a former show heifer. I would guess the sire is an AI bull, but not sure which. The young man on the halter usually has a good hand in the breeding decisions, so I am interested about the breeding...

    Congrats Windy Pine Cattle Co!

I just wanted to give a big shout out to some good friends at Windy Pine Cattle Co. They won champion Angus steer at WI state fair today. If memory serves me, this is a steer they raised. He also won Grand Champion steer at their county fair just a couple of weeks ago and I can't think of a more...

    How to show a bull?

Maybe try leaving something attached to the ring like just an extra snap. Use something that is still pretty light and he cant step on. It may help to desensitize him to having something on there without him becoming so used to it that it wont serve the intended purpose when needed. I have a...

    How to show a bull?

Did he get his ring caught once? Are you using a lightweight nose lead? As others have said, it is more of an emergency brake than a go forward button, so you can use something pretty light. I usually use a dog leash for training to be perfectly honest. I tried a heavy horse lead with a bull...

    Bodacious heifer- opinions?

I agree. Not that I think Angus is the only option for true calving ease, but it is a safer bet than most clubbies. Also, the right Angus bull could help put a bit of flex in those rear wheels and add a dose of style.

    Bodacious heifer- opinions?

As far as clipping goes, I would take her head and neck down pretty slick. I would suggest having an experienced clipper/ fitter show you how to blend her shoulders in a bit so they look like they lay in a bit better. She looks wide based (seems to show adequate space between back legs), so she...

    BR Midland Genetics

Thanks for the info! Also, thank you for the comment on the cow. She is by far my favorite in our herd. She is super docile, an excellent mother and you can lay two rulers across her hips!

    BR Midland Genetics

I am looking for some input and insight on matings for a base of Limi cows like the one pictured below. Most of our purebred females and some of our herd bulls are maternal sisters and brothers to this cow. She is a frame 7 and weighs a solid 1700lbs. We are not looking to moderate the size of...

Goat with water on his knee - Should I buy him? MORE Pictures added

In my opinion, his topline is pretty rough and he lacks natural width in his loin. Would also like to see more length in his twist. I do like the bone he has and other than that knee, he has pretty good legs. Maybe others from your region will chime in with some insight. I know there is quite a...

Goat with water on his knee - Should I buy him? MORE Pictures added

VC, I agree with you there, but I guess I would rather see the breeder feed the goat out and ship it for kill themselves, ultimately. If the breeder does truly think the issue will fix itself, he or she should be the one to take that risk!
