Here is a March Red Angus% heifer we kept

What is everyone’s go to for Weaning?

I’ve always loaded up calves, spread some cubes and hauled out as fast as I could. This year I shored up the cattle catch pen and put the calves in there for pasture weaning. I can’t tell you how stress free and calm the calves were from years past. After five days, I loaded them in trailer...

What should I do to make my my cow look “softer”

Real nice heifer. Yes, I agree with vc, ditch the high fat Purina and feed fiber, fiber, fiber. Getting a heifer bred is the goal, so nice job on that and the next goal is feeding her so she is presentable in the show ring and more importantly, her life as a cow after the show is done. Some...

    Cough Help.

How is the heifer getting along?  We use Baytril, if that doesn’t work, it’s Draxxin.

    Precon vs cotton seed hulls

Try beet pulp to drop the flank.  Is that in addition to a heifer grower ration?  If the breeder has partial interest or is helping, I would not discount their advice.  If you change the recipe or go against what they say, why would they help you down road? Keep the breeder updated, it helps...

    Precon? How long?

yes, you can switch to a grower but split with precon and fill because keep a nice belly on a heifer, plus free choice hay.  I like to turn them out in pasture at night for exercise where there is grass or round bale

    Precon? How long?

Is this a show heifer?  You can introduce a grower but my experience is that we always have supplemented heifer grower mix with 50% to 70% precon pellets and fiber such as cottonseed hull or even fill .  You can get bale of fill at Tractor Supply  that works great and is cheaper than natural...

    Uno Mas vs Brilliance

Brilliance heifer on left, Daddy’s Money Dam on the right.  That’s her first calf

    Breeding heifers.

Excellent point X-Bar, you have to decide what program you want.  With the technology available to us now, cloning, sexed semen, ET, we can do thing with our program that we didn't have 50 years ago. Market heifers and breeding heifers are two very different animals and truth be known, the...

    slick shows

100% slicked off and yes, they do look like chicken legs.  We use a Wide 10 and the better the hide, the less dry skin you get.  You don't get to hide any lack of bone.

    slick shows

Likewise, with slick steers you can tell if kids took had a good daily hair care program or not.  When you slick it off a week before the show, that exposes everything.  Signs of fungus, ant bites, scar from an accident and even blemishes from scratching.  That is what makes daily hide care so...

    slick shows

I'm not understanding about the playing field being even.  I think getting a slick sheer steer ready for show is harder than a hair fitted show.  I believe Ryan Rash confirmed this as well in his podcast.

Udders didn’t have as much milk as other cows and calf would have developed slower if left in pasture but I brought him closer to barn to give him feed early.  Need special care and creep feed early

Sorry, not speaking for everyone else, but my cows I bought with those genetics have no problem with calving but were not the best milkers.  It's better to you use them to flush and have a good recip raise the calf.

Have you ever heard of them to be good milkers?  There is a reason why there is a good business for recip cows?

Best Calving Ease Bulls that still produce competive show cattle.

I have had good experience with BDR and know others that have used him with no issues

New to showing...clubby bull or not?

We bred a Daddy’s Money / Monoply heifer to SAV Brilliance.  Got a real nice keeper heifer that really hit a growth spurt.  She’s 1-1/2 now with pic.
