12th Annual Who's Your Daddy Shorthorn Bull Sale RESULTS

  This past Who's Your Daddy Shorthorn Bull sale was one of the best we yet have had. Their were loads of people from all across North America came to check out the Bell M Farms, Saskvalley Stock Farms and Muridale Shorthorns cattle. There were lots of people at the sale resulting in 75 registered bidders and 200 people viewed the sale online at Cattle In Motion which resulted in 60 registered bidders online.

HIGH SELLERS
LOT 28- $28 000- The highest selling bull ever in the WYD bull sale was bought by Luke Bowman of Indiana. Lot 28 is big red powerful bull brought by the Muris.
LOT 48- $12 250- This roan calving ease bull was purchased by Rocking L Cattle Company of Wawota Saskatchewan who was brought to town by the Lehmans.
LOT 1- $10 000- This stout roan bull sired by Bell M Visionary who walked the ring 2 years ago was bought buy Gordon Turner of Blackie Alberta who is a repeat buyer.
LOT 15- $5 100- This long bodied yearling bull out of the Annabelle cow family was bought by Creekside Shorthorns of Holden Alberta.
LOT 22- $3 700- The high selling heifer was bought by Rocking L Cattle Company of Wawota Saskatchewan. Lot 22 is out of Bell M Farms best cow family the Missie's.

Congratulations to everyone who purchased some outstanding animals in the Who's Your Daddy sale  <beer> I am really looking forward to the arrival of Lot 1 and Lot 12!  I really think that they will do amazing things on the Simmental, Angus and Shorthorn influence females.

Congrats to everyone for a great sale! I wish I could have made it but the highways were solid ice that morning, due to a late spring storm,  and  I decided I better not chance it. I watched the sale on the computer and the bulls looked very functional and sound.
It is great to see so many commercial producers looking at Shorthorn bulls and in my opinion, the feeling you get when you see commercial producers outbidding purebred breeders for bulls in much better than any banner or trophy I have ever seen yet. In our Sun Country sale, my bulls averaged $6945, with three younger bulls being the only ones to sell under $4500. 16 of our 20 bulls sold to commercial producers. Other than our top selling bull, many of the high sellers sold to commercial buyers. One commercial man bid to $18,000 on our top bull. I guess what really makes me feel good is that it has taken many breeders many decades of commitment and hard work to start to see this commercial acceptance. We must never forget that the hard work has just started and we must continue to produce Shorthorn bulls that will work in commercial herds.
A commercial man who runs 600 cows, decided to drive 300 miles to our sale, after a friend told him about seeing our bulls a month before the sale. He bought 5 bulls for a $6750 average. After the sale he told me, that he had never attended a Shorthorn sale before. He had been considering using less Angus bulls and was thinking he would try Simmental bulls. He said that he really liked what he saw and if the bulls work well, he will be buying many more. Sometimes, the best advertising you can do is word of mouth.To me, that is what this business is about! Another thing I found interesting, is that I keep hearing that you can't sell Shorthorn bulls of color in the US. One rancher in South Dakota bought our high selling white bull at $6750. He said he had been looking for a good white bull for a while. We had interest from Kansas, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Washington and Montana ranchers and some of them bid via the internet. I expect if we had been closer to them, we would have seen more bulls sell to these operations. At least the interest is real interest and this is definitely a market worth investigating more. Most of these ranchers asked about white and roan bulls. It seems to me, that there is a possible market opportunity if someone was willing to spend some time and money to develop it.
The families involved in the Who's Your Daddy sale, have been some of the most dedicated people I know of, in regards to producing a product that will work in the commerical cattle industry. I commend them for again having a great sale. Charge on and do it again next year! This is another example of breeders who are doing it right in my opinion. That is they are keeping their eye on the entire industry when making their breeding decisions.... not just the show ring!

You know you have a problem when...
It's still cold here. I made a fire in the wood stove this morning and sat down to happily study these sale results to see how many of the high sellers were roans, breeding ingenuity, etc etc etc...lured into gazing upon the roans, I must have drifted into some kind of Shorthorn Trance because when I looked up the entire house was full of thick smoke...Hadn't opened the draft on the stove and was oblivious to everything except those bulls.
That catalog should have had a warning label!
