Hey everyone, I thought I would let the Steer Planet community know about the 14th Annual Who's Your Daddy Shorthorn Bull and Female Sale. This year we have once again a really solid set of two year old and yearling bulls. We also have some exceptional females in the offering as well.

A great bunch of bulls for sure.. This post should have been the highlight on this site as, w/o question, these bulls here represent the very best of what the Shorthorn breed has to offer.

The term high is a relative term.  What is high to one person may not be high to another person.  I believe in the 7% rule.  A cow should be able to calve a calf that is 7% of her body weight without assistance.  The average size of our cows is probably between 1400 and 1500 pounds.  I will let everyone do the math. 
If a cow can't birth a calf of this size without assistance then she should probably be culled.  We assist less than 0.25% of our mature cows (assuming normal presentation) each year.

No argument from me.  My goal is a frame score 4 1250 pound cow.  Using your formula that is an 87.5 pound calf.  I am guessing that a 105 lb calf probably won't produce many frame score 4 1250 cows.  Lot 14 has me intrigued though.

True.  Some good bulls in there whose bw's exclude them from what I would consider to be 'purebred herd consideration' but I'm sure there's some operations out there that can find the terminal value in those lots carrying more more excessive bw's.  There's 62 bulls selling: 35 with bw's >90 lbs, 27 with bw's </90lbs.  Kevin Ochsner stated at the Shorthorn conference that when the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association surveyed their members, the largest percentage of respondents stated that they considered birth weights over 90 pounds to be "excessive," so there's still nearly half the bulls in the offering with what, at least the NCBA's collective membership, considers to be acceptable bw's. 

With that said, there's more bulls in this sale deserving of purebred herd consideration than in any other Shorthorn offering I've seen to date.  The lot 18 Alamo son, Copyright, most worth noting. This bull has a 84lb bw, ratio'd 106 for bw, 117 for ww, 110 for yw, 110 for RE, 102 for FAT, and 120! for IMF.  This bull is exceptional! You just don't come across bulls with his profile that are also as good as he appears in the flesh. If you're in the market for a premier Shorthorn bull, Copyright is as deserving of consideration as any.

I don't disagree with what you say.  I know I am the oddball here in that I want frame score 4 cows.  I am encouraged that there are a couple of bulls that fit my specs, that was not the case a few years ago,

Haven't seen him in person yet but that lot 14 bull looks awful good in his picture and he meets your specs. Pretty impressive performance for that frame size. He must be pretty wide and deep. Sure looks like it in the picture. Got a good head on him too.

I believe this statement to be true and I am not trying to argue, but 2 things crossed my mind when I read this statement.  1) I am pretty sure that most of the NCBA's membership is in the states, and 2) if you were to survey commercial cattlemen in Canada most would use a number higher than 90 pounds as their line between acceptable and excessive.

I believe he has the highest IMF score in the sale and a little more back fat.

That is a good point.  Then he has the highest IMF in that herds sale offering.  I stand corrected.

Carl I think that if I were to criticize him it would be the distance between his hind legs.  I agree about the head.
