1941 Grand Champion Steer

With folks headed to Kentucky this week, we thought we'd post this old film about the 1941 Chicago International grand champion steer.

Before they closed the doors on the Chicago show in the 1970s and moved it to Louisville, the International was the greatest livestock event in the world.

Make sure you watch it to 6:00, where you'll see the Firestone-sponsored luxury van used to transport the steer around the country.

He looks sound enough to get to the feed bunk.  Could use a little more extension out the front.  Looks about the right frame size for today.  ;D

Really enjoy the old videos. Interesting to use how we have changed. I don't think tough he's a heat wave or monopoly.

It's a good thing he did not have to eat off the ground, I do not think he could reach the feed. He sure looked like he enjoyed the attention, he probably would have walked in the ring and shown himself. I'm guessing a steak from that steer was like butter, no knife and just let it sit in your mouth and melt.

That's great.  He was pretty sure he was living it up.  Till he wound up in a C ration.

One of the most curious/interesting/unique sets of photos I have seen is at a friends house.  His wife had the Champion angus (maybe overall, not sure) steer at the Royal in the mid 50's in one photo.  On another wall was their son with a many time Iowa champion Chi steer about 1980/1981.  Talk about two extremes.  Her steer resembled the one in the video.  His, did not.     Neither may have been able to graze off the ground.

For all that times seem to change, a whole lot of what is discussed in the second clip is still relavant today. 

Also, what Missouri FFA chaper is in this clip?  I couldnt make out the chaper name.  FFA jackets haven't changed much either  ;D
