1999 Dodge Ram

What do you guys think of the Dodge 3500. I am thinking abotu buying a 1999 dodge 3500 dually, with a 5.9L, 24 valve cummions.  How's the gas milage?? Thanks a lot

My husband has had several Dodge diesels and loves them.  However, he has been told that the fuel mileage on the 07 and 08 is not good.  Too much smog control etc for the engine to perform.  Also complaints from the neighbor that it's not pulling like the older models.

We bought our first deisel, an 07 Dodge, last spring.  Don't have another one to compare it to, but am getting ~22 MPG without towing and about 17 MPG under load.  The trailer that we have is small, but I am very happen with my Cummins Turbo powered Ram. (thumbsup)

This truck has never pulled a gooseneck trailer, hasn't been chipped. If I buy it will be pulling a goosneck, be chipped, with a cold air intake, and have a 6 inch exaust (thumbsup)

166,000 miles, I have seen folks around here run them until they have 300,000 on them and the truck still run good

Yes I know the owner, he is a 70 year old man. The truck is up for auction that is 1.5 miles from my house. I have heard nothing but good about these trucks ;D

FWIW, I bought my 1998 Dodge, quad cab, 2500, 4X4, 24 Valve Diesel, with automatic transmission, brand new from our local dealer.  I put it through the ringer from day 1.  I've always been told to break them in just like you are going to drive them & that's exactly what I did.  I hauled cattle in our 24 foot goosneck, I hauled 1700+ board feet of red oak logs on a homemade gooseneck log trailer & I did a lot of other similar things with it.  Most of the first 50,000 miles where pulling a trailer.  It's been a good one!  I like it much better than the Ford Diesel Dually & the Chevy 454 Dually that I owned prior to owning this one.

That is why I use autotrader. You can search the entire country after you have the numbers. Lets face it KBB and NADA are appraisals, but it is only worth what one person is willing to pay for it. So , check out comparibles on autotrader to get an idea of prices.

I drive a 01 dodge 3/4 ton cummins and love it!!  Wether it is pulling a trailor, or driving down the highway I am getting about 19 hwy with the HO motor and a 6 speed.  I have heard that the autos get better fuel economy though.  I would buy a Cummins over anything else on the road right now.

Just throwing my two cents worth in here but be sure if you buy it to take it to a front end place and have it gone over very well.
We sell more front end parts for Dodge than other heavy truck brands.  We have several farms that were running them and everything about
the engine and trany were excellent but they couldnt keep front ends under them very well.  Also there was a period there when they
road walked alot.  I think it was earlier than 99 but do some research.  The engine...if it was well maintained is worth about 2500 by itself.
If its at auction and you get it for under 5 its a good deal, especially if it has been taken care of.  I have seen vehicles with only 50,000 miles
on it and the engine is junk because someone didnt take care of it.  Also maintenence on a Dodge is less expensive than on Ford and Chev.
By that I mean regular maintenence items.

Most people prefer the 12V, from 94-early 98, but they are tougher to find and still sell pretty high.  Very easy engine to work on and you can get a ton of power out them.

I have always liked the cummins, even though I have a 7.3 powerstroke right now.
