2011 Ugly Calf Contest

DANGIT! I had a calf that could've easily won this contest but already got rid of him and his no milking momma.

Well, I don't have a picture, but my youngest son fed an Angus steer this year.  He started out fine but developed a respiratory infection last summer which turned chronic.  He'd be sick a week and off feed, then get better for a few weeks and then back on the cycle.

Should have sold him a long time ago, but we kept on trying.  He got real bad six weeks ago.  We got him over it, let him get outside of antibiotic withdrawal times, and took him to the sale barn.  Needless to say he looked a little rough.

Our 990 pound calf brought $95.00 - total.  He must have looked like he was on death's doorstep when he went in the ring.  Beat that one!  Does one have to be present to win?

I actually think that blue roan baldy is pretty cool marked.  She wouldnt be hard to sell for a show heifer around here just because of her color.  What is she? An Indian Outlaw??

My son would have loved the coloring of the blue roan a few years ago.  Just hold on some one will come along and buy her on color alone is he is priced right.

Thanks for all the comments! I just shake my head and grin every time I look at that thing. She really sticks out in a herd of black and baldy cows. The calf is actually a Wernacre's Off Road x 1/2 Maine x SimAngus. My daughter will show her as a 1/4 Maintainer. Out of the cow that producer this Hardcore daughter 2 years ago.

That may take the cake. I'd feel awful if that happened.

Neighbor got 25 for a 700 pounder that should have brought over a 1/lb last summer.  Nothing was on the check, so he called and found out the steer caught itself on a nail at the sale barn and ripped half a side of hide off.  There was supposed to be an insurance check with his sale check, had he not called he would have been out a chunk of change.

A lot of crossbred cows in the Ozarks were colored-up like her, when I was very young, during the 70's. Kinda takes me back, down memory lane. Cows colored a lot like her, put to a good, deeper-bodied-type Charolais bull would produce rip-snortin' smokey calves ( that weighed about 70% of the what the cow weighed, come weaning time), with no visible "roaning".

was this before or after commission?


I can top it..  The sale barn actually sent us a bill awhile back on some bull calves we sold though them.  

It was when bottle calves were being "given' away, really..  The calf sold, and when the United Reducers took out their commission, the calves (S) did  not bring enough to cover their costs.. They ACTUALLY SENT US A BILL!!  Needless to say, we did not pay it.

I realize you lost far more money than we 'did'.. but atleast you got enough cash back to buy lunch! (lol)

There certainly seems to be two schools of thought on the attractiveness of this critter 

Cruiser, the other heifer is a 3/4 Maine Hard Core daughter.

Nice looking calf.  I like calves with color.  Black may be beautiful, but it gets boring, too.
