5 day co-synch CIDR Time AI - I did it!

This is mainly directed at CAB because in past topics this protocol has been discussed and I went ahead and used it on my cows this year.

Last year I used the 7 day protocol and had a 53% conception rate to the time AI, good but not great.

So far we're right at the peak of repeats from the 5 day time AI and results are looking so good it's freaking me out. Right now it's looking like we're going to improve 10-15% on the time AI from last year! Of my mature cows I've only rebred 3 of 47.

I hope I'm not jinxing myself posting this, but I'll follow up with a post when we're done watching repeats.

At this point compared to last year I have done 17% less repeats! Most of my repeats have been 2 and 3 year old cows. I'm going to keep watching for a few more days and would expect a couple more. With that said I think we could end up in the low 70s for conception to the TAI which I am THRILLED about since we're in the midst of a horrendous drought and we've been feeding less than ideal hay.

One month prior to the TAI I gave all the cows a Min Max II  and Vitamin ADE shot and used EstroPlan as the prostaglandin this year. We've done the mineral and vitamin shots in the past but I don't think we were timing it just right and this year we did. I do think they make a difference.

Again, hope I'm not jinxing myself but I'm feeling a little more confident now

I have done the 5 day synch twice. Both times I have had a cow come in to heat 4-7 days later. Don't know why but they did. I'm going to use the 5 day again in the spring and see what happens.

I didn't notice any cows coming in shortly after the synch. I wasn't looking for it but the cows are up in pens right now so I probably would've noticed anything in a week after.

I have been using the 7 day protocol with both insertion of  CIDR and injection 2cc GNGH (Cystorelin) at day 0 and removal of CIDR and injection of 5cc  Lutalyse at day 7.  Then  I watch for standing heat and breed cows 12 hours later, up until I reach 60 hours post "removal of CIDR and injection of GNRH, when I breed everything, not already bred based "On Timing".  I also give another injection of 2cc of Cystorelin at time of breeding. 

My problem is, my conception rate has fallen off dramatically in the last three (3) years!  Previously I was getting from 60%-70% conception, the last two (2) years I have been lucky to get 50%.  I have discussed it with my embryologist Cattle Repro Specialist (Veterinarian) and we are both very frustrated.  (Especially with cows showing "good CL", then inserting embryos and only getting about 33% conception!).

He is suggesting that next Summer, (as I only have a Spring calving herd), I omit the CIDR and only uses the injections of GNRH.

What are your thoughts?

1. Is Min Max II?  Is it a dry granular free choice cow mineral?  What percent salt does it contain?  What are the intake amounts (i.e. ounces per head per day) do you obtain, under normal conditions?  Who makes it?  Where do you purchase it?  What is the cost per a 50# bag?  My cows are on a good 8:12 cattle mineral year round and I add CTC @ a 50 gram level from approx 30 days prior to calving until after breeding season.

2. What is the design or intent of the Vitamin ADE injection?  I mean, besides increasing conception, how does it work, or what does it do?  When do you inject it and how many cc do you inject?

Just a question out of curiousity, are you using new young bulls concerning your drop off in AI conception rates? No real #s here as far as keeping track, but I have  better luck settling cows/heifers with semen collected from an older bull. Again just curious if anyone else thinks that this may be true?

Mineral Max II is a subcutaneous injectable trace mineral supplement for Copper, Selenium, Zinc, and Manganese. You have to obtain a prescription from a vet to get it and I buy it at a local animal health supply store. It's a little pricey ($2-$3/dose) but with all the investment going into a TAI I want my cows to be in top form. We also do year round mineral supplementation with molasses lick tubs. My vet recommended the Vitamin and mineral injections. I TAI my cows in December when forage has gone dormant and hay is being fed. It's mostly to make up for the lower vitamin content in their diet. I usually only do AD but this year did ADE because of severe drought conditions. I give the vitamin and mineral injections (as well as their annual vaccinations) a month prior to the TAI and the bottles have recommended dosages on them.
