Hello every one -- this is going to be a VERY special post -- here goes.
A couple years ago almost to the day, our dear friend Red and I came up with the idea of trying to find a special person/family who may have some special circumstances and could use a shot in the arm -- so to speak.
I wanted to donate a complete flush of one of thier donor cows - start to finish -- with no cost to the winner. WE held a drawing, having as many nominees as possible sent to Red -- and later -- her famous dog Woody was to grab the winning ticket and run off with it. What a fun time that was -- sadly however, the winning party never could come up with a donor cow, and the free flush was never done.
Recently -- one of very very good S-P friends had a terrible thing happen, and he and his family will be in our prayers for a very long time -- our very own R W !
Late in Oct, I spent a week at his home, stayed in thier psare bedroon for 5 days as we went for rides, went out to the woods when the weather permitted - and just had some good old free time. It was a special week for me.
Not long after coming home with RW's 8061 donor in tow, I recieved the news about Darby -- and we were all crushed. My calender was full and I sat here wondering what I could do to help that great family in such a terrible time in thier lives. Finally it dawned on me --I had the perfect thing right here in my donor pen. So the plan was as soon as she was ready to flush-- it was gong to be on ME !!
The cow -- now named Darby 8061 -- came in heat and was all set to go. Shots were started and things looked like they were well on thier way to a good deal. Then the weather hit -- first it was cold and rain, then another storm 2 days later dumped 8 inches of snow and the temps dropped to -0-, every thing including the cows were froze solid. I was crushed as I figured the donor would never have a chance to respond, let along show heat and fertilize and grow those embryos.
She came in heat 12 hours late, not normal, it was 12 degrees out that day. She was miserable -- so I waited to see what would take place -- called Stu and he said give her a shot of semen any way -- just for kicks. At noon the next day I went out with " 1 " unit of pretty spendy semen, and split it between the horns, half on one side and half on the other -- and walked away thinking NO WAY was this going to work.
This after noon at about 4-30 -- we flushed that cow. I at first was dissapointed as she didn't respond real well -- at least by feeling her smaller than normal ovaries. I came in and prepped the flush for searching -- and it was if Darby herself was standing there -- first one, then another -- then another -- until we had a total of 12 eggs -- of these -- there were 9 number 1, and 2 almost as good number 2's.
These are some of the best embryos we have seen this month, and I am extremely proud to tell you all that this flush was done in Darby's memory and honor --
Merry Christmas Stu my friend, you will for ever be in our prayers, and now -- there are 11 frozen embryos with Darby's name written on each straw -- the cow is documented as "" Darby 8061 "
Stu == please forgive me for being so sentimental here, and I sincerely hope this helps you -- instead of making you feel bad. I can not think of a better thing to do, especially at this time of year - (thumbsup)
Merry Christmas to all -- I have been given the extreme pleasure of giving today -- a gift of love that will change you forever -- and I will always remember Darby -- even though I met her only a very few times.
Sincerely -- Terry - Denise -- and family!
