Ahead of their time??

Since we have had all the discussion on old bulls lately, what bulls of years gone by were ahead of their time?

Both maternal and clubby.

I read in the embryo listing for Denver that the TJ bull was ahead of his time. I think that might be a little true. He did not really catch on in a big way, but I think that people are finally looking at maternal instead of clubby x clubby x clubby.

I was just thinking about the good bulls that are gone and that were not 'right' for their era.  But, would still make a positive impact today.

TJ was the first to come to mind, but, I went back and used him, and Bounty Hunter.  Clean useful genetics.

i have been thinking about that as well.  Starting to bounce around breeding decisions for spring and keep coming back to some older genetics.  What do you breed that HW THC cow too that will make them right for the times  what do you use on those good sim/angus cows that need more power and look without getting into the carrier gene pool, etc. ?  There are undoubtedly some WMW and Full Flush soms out there that were a little ahead of their time,  maybe very useful today on the chubby , chunky carrier cows.  Has anyone used Cheap Trick back on HW or Sunseeker daughters?  Friction can't be the only flush son that would still work.  what are some others from that gerneration that might see a resurgence?  I went back to some DeBull last spring, also used Pitch Black (PHAF full brother to Godfather) .  Thoughts?  I think we know the timeless bulls, but which were just born 10 years too early.

There have been alot of usefull shorthorns-one good all around bull woild be CSF Dextro-an extremly thick-reasonable calving bull. O0

Probably 99% of the people reading this will NEVER have heard of this bull......but in the late 70's when I first started AIing......there was a yellow and white purebred Simmental bull called MCR Monarch.....he made them EXACTLY WRONG for the time.....small framed, big muzzled, smaller headed and really big bodied......back in a time they wanted 10+ frame scores with NO GUTS!

Those MCR Monarch daughters produced FOREVER!  I think MCR stood for Muddy Creek Ranch....but I don't remember what state they were from.

I think the ultimate bull for being ahead of his time was Cunia . He was not appreciated even a fraction as much when he was alive as he was years after his death. I also remember the Simmi bull MCR Monarch. I had a few daughters of him, when we had our Simmental herd, and they were outstanding females. I wonder if there is semen someplace of him today? He was not solid black or red, but he was good!

I think I checked with SEK a couple years ago and it seems like they actually had some.....I wonder what frame score he actually was......probably bigger than what we realized!

Tj sired alot of good daughters that have produces numerous winners and promotional bulls and still doing it today.  To bad he died a few years ago.  Dont know if there is much semen around.  I know of a few people that have some.

Monarch was actually raised in Saskatchewan about 30 or 40 miles south of Moose Jaw and then sold to Muddy Creek Ranch in Nebraska.  He was supposed to be 59 inches and weigh just over 2300 pounds in comparison Cunia was listed as 61 inches and 2600 pounds.  Not that long ago a friend of mine had I believe close to 200 units of Monarch in his tank.

I would have to agree that Cunia has been a bull before his time, and maybe a bull of all times.  I know a few years ago, Heartbeat resurfaced as a popular bull...he may have been nefore his time...odd, he's a Cunia son.

Back in the day, when taller and bigger was the goal, the DeJongs in So. Dak. produced a black Maine bull. I believe he was a 7/8 th Maine. My goal at that time was to produce some purebred black maines. That was very hard to do, using full blood maine bulls. Black 3/4 ths were fairly easy, but it got a lot harder after that. 15/16 th was considered purebred. I bought some of the first semen from the DeJong bull called Power Plant. When I used him on 1/2 and 3/4 Maine cows, the calves nearly made me puke. We called them puds. They were a major downsize, and didn't have the grow associater with the fullbloods. Little did I know. I think Power Plant was just on the cusp of being ahead of his time. It seems to me that he was gone before really being popular. I really missed that one. If I recall correctly, bulls like Peter's Black Gold and PC Metric came along just a year or so later. Oh well <cowboy>

What about Meyer 734

totally agree, remember as a kid people talking about this bull but many dismissed him because of his milk numbers (funny for arguably the best maternal sire the simmental breed has seen). If I only knew what I know now.

There were alot of simmental bulls back in Monarch's time that were really great female makers that would still work today but they got lost in the race to have them all black and all polled. Ueli and Signal come to mind but that was right before the frame score(C&B Incumbent) and color issue. My farorite old simmental bulls were Mr. Clean, not the recent one but the one that was around in the early 80's. he was a yellow white face bull that was really cool fronted and balanced for his time. I also think there was a black bull in the late 80's that was marked just like 734 that was just as good female maker on angus cows called High Interest.

The old Gallant simmental bull awfull good. His registration number was 10. There alot a good cattle out there. All bred for different purposes. Trends will swing around and find certain bulls. Thats why I hate to see everybody doing the "me too program". Whar has happened to the Hubs shorthorn herds,Line 1 herds, Dover, Sitz,Olhde, etc.etc. They had a program and when the trend swung their way, there they were. Now everybody has to use trump, or sony, or me too...me too.
