My main problem with this is with what A&W did not say in their new promotional release. I attended a meeting a couple nights ago which was attended by many urban people. This topic came up during a coffee break, and one lady said she was concerned to buy beef from the grocery store anymore. I asked her why and she said she had read the new A&W press release and it said that they would be offering a safer product from now on. To her, this meant that there had to be something wrong with the beef supply that every consumer buys. I tried to tell her that this was just an A&W decision to provide a specialized product and to gain more market share. By the comments around the table, I think many of the people there were siding with the lady who thought the beef they were feeding their families was suspect.
I agree that A&W should be able to purchase their beef wherever they want to do so. What I don't like is their " insinuation that they will now be offering a safer and more ecological product. It almost laughable when they say " the burgers they will offer, will leave a smaller environmental footprint". That is definitely a statement aimed at the urban consumer. As I said earlier, I just dislike what isn't said in their new promotion.
To me this is just another smack for today's beef producers who have worked overtime to provide a safe and ethically raised product. I happen to believe our beef supply is the highest quality product the industry has ever provided. I am just tired of corporations like this, once again, trying to gain market share with no regard to the hard working beef producers who bend over backwards to make this happen. I understand that life oftentimes isn't fair but I also understand that when an injustice appears, we should try to correct it rather than just shrug our shoulders and accept it.
A&W's Canadian corporate headquarters is in Vancouver, BC, which is the heartland of Canada's earth muffin geeks. It sure sounds to me like they have managed to work their way to the board table at A&W.
