I have searched this topic and read a lot of older posts but would like some thoughts on a low bw angus bull to use on heifers. I was thinking about possibly using the same bull on some cows to try to get replacements. I go through ABS and a lot of the bulls I have read on the posts, they don't carry. I will have a few calves this year out of styles Upgrade, so he may be one option. I know In-focus is heavily used but has varying opinions on the calves, but i thought about him. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you are breeding Angus heifers-- then your choices get narrowed down..

if you are breeding heifers of about any other breed-- you can make a list of Angus bulls you like- throw a dart at it-- and it will almost always be a good choice...

One out of Sunseeker, the rest out of  sunseeker/angus bull  and all the dams are all commercial.  I think I might take your dart idea  <cowboy>

If you work with ABS Final Product would be a great choice.  Calving ease and still gives them the look.

Don't use Bismarck or Brand name.  Ive never seen such round shouldered, broken topped, round hipped, over hyped cattle in all my life.  Really your choices depend on what you want to do but In Focus has some of the ugliest cattle I have ever seen.  I agree with the Final product discussion, Styles upgrade may be ok if you can stand the hind legs.  It's not too hard to outsource a little.  Look at BC Classic, Connealy Revenue, or TC Touchdown.

We have used In Focus with good success. Calves come small, only problem is they don't really hit a growth spurt till about a year old, but are making some nice cows. We have been using OCC Homer for years and really like our calves out of him and our Rocky Balboa heifers.

Thanks for the input. Know I am wondering about what everyones thoughts are on the calves out of Final Product, Image Maker, 878, and Bluestem (he is a new bull that ABS carries) not sure of his age or if there is many progeny out there.  What would throw the best for replacements (ABS carries sexed semen on a couple of these bulls). I don't get out to view enough cattle due to my real job, to know what the calves out of them look like.

If you are going with ABS, I would suggest Mandate. They used him two years at the place where I work on both heifers and cows. The calves are born small, look good, and are docile. Mandate also seemed to work well in timed breeding.

There are a lot of good angus heifer bulls out there. Good luck!  ;D

Mine I need to go back to school. I am having a hard time trying to find a bull. I didn't go to school for animal science or any other related course. I just love cattle and I am trying to improve my overall herd both for maternal traits and clubby calves and wow. I don't have a clue where to go with this years breeding. I have been looking at pics of bulls ond its hard to decide anything by a pic. I do need more thickness, muscle and bone in most of my cows. But right now I am focusing on building more maternal cattle to improve my herd. So I am having a tough decision on what bull may produce me a quality cow 3-5 years down the road.(I am still breeding my best cows to clubby bulls), but overall do I go with a proven sire from the 2000's or something new and upcoming that we don't know exactly what the cows will turn out like. ?????????? <beer> It was a long week and I got cattle on the brain and it's a long time til calving season and even longer til AI'ing.

T510 was bred a raised 15 miles south of us.  While I truly respect Philipp's breeding program and admire their accomplishments, T510 would not be my first choice.  Especially if you are trying to produce any sort of show cattle, pure bred Angus or otherwise.  He will add some great carcass characteristics and is calving ease.  But as Aussie mentioned, his feet and leg structure may disappoint you.  Just a little small hoofed and fine boned/crooked legged for me.  Mind you I am in the Angus business and don't need them all to look like club calves.  But as big as the Angus gene pool is there may be better choices.
