I wouldn't put a Shorthorn Bull on an Angus heifer.  On Angus cows, however, Vegas has produced numerous national ShorthornPlus champions.  Double Vision has also worked great.  Both are TH carriers though.

Looking for clubbies or momma cows? Wanting the famous blue roans or are you wanting to keep them solid black? Or at least solid colored.

I have bred lots of Angus heifers to Shorthorn bulls, with no problems. We also sell lots of bulls each year that are to be used on heifers. We used to breed 250 heifers a year and they were all bred to Shorthorn bulls and we had lots of repeat customers for these heifers. You may have problems using clubby bulls on heifers of any kind, but this idea that Shorthorns cannot be used on heifers is simply not true. Like any breed, you have to watch what bulls you use. Bulls Like coyote mentioned , Buster, or his son Buster 2nd, will calve easily, and they sire calves with thickness and style.
Here in these parts, many people believe Red Angus are the bull of choice for use on heifers. My vet tell me that the Red Angus calves he c-sections have paid for his new vet clinic.  There are easy calving Red Angus bulls, just as there are easy calving Shorthorn bulls. You just have to find them.

The other factor to remember that sometimes it is the heifer that is responsible for having to assist a birth. Some heifers would have problems if they were bred to a Jersey or a Longhorn bull.  I am also convinced that constant selection for low birth weights in our bulls,  for several generations, is also selection for smaller pelvic size in our replacement heifers. There is some good research that is showing that this is true.

I am also looking for a Shorty bull to breed to my RA cows.  The youngest is a second calver.  They are almost all phenotypically different....so much for raising consistent cattle....but I would like to produce clubby Mama cows out of this mating.  I would like to maintain their structure, and thickness.  I would like to add a bit of bone, frame, base-width, and power.  I have tried to PM justintime 3 times about Gus semen but you have not answered me yet!  :(.  I am real hopeful that Gus will be able to export, although I cannot bank on that, and am now looking for other shorty bulls to use this spring.  I would of coarse love some JPJ, but I am pretty sure he is not exportable!  Does anybody else have any suggestions for me?  I am pretty much in the same boat as clubcalve.

How true on both points.  Pelvic measurment of heifers would eliminate a lot of future problems.  We have used Shorthorn bulls on our RA females to produce the Durham Reds, with a huge increase in BW.  But I think it was a poor choice on our part of the bulls we used.  Lat year I did find a new Shorthorn bull named Osage to use on heifers, and his calves have been smaller & easily delivered.  Time will tell how they grow.  Good luck with your venture.

JIT has a lot of good bulls, but unless something has happened I don't know about, then you need to be pm'ing Stumpy about Gus semen. One of JIT's that I would like to see on some RA cows would be his Irish Mist son.
