Anyone Show Horses?

My youngest daughter started showing horses last year in 4H and I must admit I really and enjoying it.  There are horse shows almost every weekend, the 4H and Open shows are usually somewhat competitve but not out of reach.  She is showing a $600 mare that is 25 years old and she has won several classes this year.  No fans, no chutes, no show boxes to carry and she shows western, english, and games so she is able to enter about 10 classes per show with the same horse.  Anyone else show horses?

We used to show a bunch.  Started showing halter and western pleasure when I was nine, eventualy showed halter and team roping in AQHA, that gets very competitve and pretty political.  The last horse I showed was a foundation quarter horse stallion for my 77 year old dad.  Only time we ever got that horse beat was a disqualification, he reared up and pawed me during the show.  Gotta love handeling a 2 year old stud colt at a big show!!  We had a lot of fun over the years.

One of my all time favorite pics -- these two are both two year olds, after less than 30 days. The colt on the left was here as a trainer, the one on the right is Dunny -- my now 4 year old steel grey. The boy (Man) is Nate -- he is absolutely the best at getting these colts started -- something no one be taught to do if you don't have it in the blood! And you all thought I just raised show steers??? hehehe

I showed barrel and pole horses for years. Had a lot of fun at it & made a lot of good friends. Never really did any halter or pleasure classes as it can get too political in my opinion. The automatic timer doesn't know who is running when it shuts off. We mainly messed with futurity prospects ,selling them after we got them running good( I geuss some people would say a horse trader is worse than a steer jock  ;D). We always managed to keep a couple of aged horses around for the open shows & AQHA shows,though also.

OUr daughter does rodeos and it is now paying for her college.  Was lucky enuf to go to the National High School finals and Nation Little Britches.  Nice hauling with no extras!!!

I did some jumping and Dressage a few years ago, never really showed tough...focused more on cattle now. But still ride (it gives you freedom!!)

Yep I am on the equine team at my college, I am learning reined cow horse, I am learning english, I have rodeod and Im a rodeo queen. I have shown professionally for other people but never had the money to get those level of horses. Love showing horse maybe a little more than cattle because there is such a variety of stuff and always new challenges

I did some showing when I was in middle school. Trained with an Olympic rider for 3 years but then got into cattle after a car accident ended my competitive riding. The first is of me and my Thoroughbred, Helaban, at my house. The second is of me and my Appy, Shilo, with my cousin. The last one is one of my senior pics, it's me with my Quarter Horse Filly last Aug. She is as big as a weed now. Anyways before I get all the hits on not wearing a helmet, back then my head was hard enough to take a couple hits!!!  )) yea myself!!!!

My daughter used to rodeo before she took up showing cattle.  I grew up doing rodeo and I just figured that it was going to be her thing too.  Well she had a really bad accident about three years ago running barrels.  She could have died in this kind of accident, but luckily she just broke her arm and got banged up.  It shook us all really bad.  I made sure I got her back on her horse once the cast came off, but it never was the same for her or for me either. 

We sold her really good barrel horse and that is when she got into showing cattle....we have never looked back.  I miss the excitement of the rodeo life, but life is too short and we all love doing the cattle thing all together as a family. 

Here is a picture of Shelby and "Doughboy".  We sold him to a great family and they really love him!

I used to ..  Western Pleasure was my game.    I've also done reining, cutting, horsemanship, halter, and some speed events but always go back to WP.      I lost my good pleasure mare to colic about 5 years ago and have not replaced her, I may someday.    I quit doing barrels & poles after I had my knee surgery so I sold my barrel mare.    Just recently, the kids have taken an interest in doing some showing so we might be back into it someday.    They are going to do showmanship & halter classes at the county fair next week.  We'll see how that goes.

I started showing horses as a very small child. In those days every town had a saddle club and monthly show so you could go to one or two a week every month through the summer. As I got older we got away from it and sold most of the horses we had. Today I use horses on the ranch for various purposes from driving and sorting cows to pasture doctoring calves. I cannot remember a time in my life that I did not have a horse. Although the show horses we had back then are quite different than the horses I have today. RW

I showed as a kid and it was the highlight of my summer going to horse shows every weekend. My kids are just starting to ride but probably won't be as in love with it as I was. My youngest is starting to get interested though. Here he is riding at the fair last year!

I have shown Appaloosa horses since I was 18 months old.  I was 3rd in the Nation in Showmanship and placed 15th at Nationals my 8th grade year.  I have 2 top ten halter horses that I fitted myself.  I am looking for a new horse for my daughter to show.  She loves horses anytime she sees horses on tv she will crawl to the tv and sit and watch them and she is only 9 months old.  I think showing horses helped me with showing cattle.

It is great to see everyones pictures.  It seems to me that showing animals just gets in your blood.  Like I said I grew up showing cattle but I am really enjoying the horse shows.  A barn in our area had a three show circuit this summer, the final show was last weekend and my daughter ended up winning the all around, she was very excited.

Our family has always been active in horses since they were small , barrel crawl up to barrrel racing an plenty of team roping.  Have you ever double hocked a critter like this ........  We use the mechanical steer for practice an traing horses , an is great tool to teach kids how to rope an not hurt the livestock an you can slow them down where the younger people can handle it better ......
