Baby calves (from SA Commander) and one more

Anybody ever use SA Commander 226?  An Angus bull from a long time ago (mid to early 90s)? 

I purchased a bunch of his semen- for $5. a straw; just to have around...  Last fall was looking for something to breed some average black cows to- was short on semen so used it...  Here's what resulted-- pictured at about 2 weeks old.  Birthweights were good 73 and 68, both bulls; both are pretty leggy at this time... I'm going to guess and say they'll remain that way-- but when I was at home for Thanksgiving they had both really begun to put it on, and were turned around- and looking not quite as average...  As of next weekend, I'll have some more pictures of them to compare...  The bigger calf, is a week older- his dam is a Pharo 5 Star daughter (about a 6 frame ), that goes back to a Limi cow.  The smaller calf is from a BECKTON LANCER F442 daughter back to a Sim cow...

The R/W calf, is kinda neat-- sired by the shorthorn bull we used for cleanup last year- and his dam is a Major League x Lucky Dice...  His sire is pictured last. 

Don't have any other baby calf pictures to share-  Have a real cool Polar Express x M&M Visionary heifer calf-- (maternal sister to the neat heifer in my avatar that some have seen before...)

thanks... as I read through that caption.. It makes me wonder...  have what we select for, changed that much?  That sounds like something I'd read at the stall of a promo bull @ Denver '12...  Maybe it's just the words that get slapped on every bull out in promotion?  Did the caption actually fit the bull, or was it just words to sell more semen? 

Boy the beast sure looks like something from the 90s though... 

I've seen that picture before, but never the ad...

Wow that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. We never had calves by him but from what I remember a few friends used him and they weren't that bad looking. I can't remember who they did show wise.

my brother had a slug of Commander daughters back in the day.  They were really nice cows, very clean chested and rocket necked for angus cattle.  probably 2/3 of his current cow herd traces back to the orginal Commander daughters.  Don't know what kind of market there would be for the bull calves, heifers would be worth keeping around.    Remember he was in use at the time of bigger, harder made ones, but he could sure change a set of plain cows in a hurry,  if i had some smaller framed angus cows that needed more look, he would be a good choice

not when it costs $2 a straw to collect... and then $5. every quarter to store per batch...

Seems to me that he sired some tighter wound, harder doing type with lots of leg.    I never used him because that is what scared me off.  Decent enough bull at $5, even for a 1992 model.

if they're black.. larger framed, look to have some grow, and have good milking mamas... they'll sell great as feeders- especially being born at an off time!

Commander was a stud.  I was around him numerous times.  I worked the sale when he sold at Sonderup Angus, pushing bulls in the chute.  Won't forget that morning; I think we started at 4:00 a.m., and I don't think that it was above 15 degrees that whole day!

I want to say he was the high seller at $8000 or $9000...back when a $2500 sale average was outstanding. 

He was phenotypically right, no doubt.  I was also good friends with the family that bought him, and he did pretty well for them, making lots of very fancy heifers and growthy bulls.  I could see him working nicely on some Ohlde/Duff type cows now. 

That's a blast from the past!!!
