I'm hoping TJ is correct, try to breed great MA heifers keep the best... would a good maine cow bred to a good maine bull throw a decent steer, I hope so but doubt I could compete with that same cow times a clubby bull,,,,but  can a pure maine cow's calf compete in the texas steer shows??? can a pure shorthorn cow'ss calf compete in the texas steer shows?

YES, clubby or purebred on the right Maine cow can and does compete with anything out there.

I know without a doubt you can produce a great Show Steer from a great PB Maine-Anjou cow, but not sired by a high% MA bull.   You'll have to breed with the composite bulls.

I voted none because we are partial to shorthorns.
If i were and we did get back into it several years back. We realize that you had to look at your local market you would be competing in. What is there a market for? Also what is readily available in the way of other breeders. Red's farm is pretty much in the same area as ours. There are some large club breeders that have notoriety on the national scene. We push the shorthorns harder than we do clubbies. Hard to compete with some of those 200 cow herds that have been at it for years.
You also have to think about what you can buy for reasonable price. Do some research.
can be a tough market!
