Beware of Scam Buyer

We posted a classified yesterday for a bull for sale.  We got weird email from a guy interested and they way he worded things was also strange.  We wanted to buy without calling to ask questions and would not give location.  He also wanted to send cashiers check and a someone to pickup bull.  I emailed him back that we were not interested in selling without cash or money order. Also some of the email would not deliver to him either. We never heard back from him.  His Name is Harry Laporta on email and his email address is [email protected].  Steerplanet has verified that he is not a member of steer planet.

Here is one that tried to scam me: kenneth bosshart <[email protected]>

It was pretty obvious, email wasn't even written in proper English and he only wanted one of the embryo's I had listed.

Unfortunately, this is pretty rampant anywhere where you sell online.  We have a couple measures to prevent it;  your email is not shown in classifieds, and the contact form has a captcha.  But, for the guy sitting in Nigeria that wants to spend the time to manually fill out a form and email you, the only protection is your common sense.

Also all members that join classifieds or forum are scanned through a database looking for emails or ips that match up with a spam database.

Here are some tips I list on the classifieds page.

DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.

NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer.

FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.

STEERPLANET IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"

NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)

AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.

I was bored so I thought I would mess with my classified ads scammer.  It was pretty obvious from the beginning that this was a scam and sure enough, a fake cashiers check showed up for $1955 followed by an email on where to wire the difference(in Ecuador).  I thought I would share the last couple of emails I had with him for kicks: (I love it when crooks call me a crook)

Im not interested in buying the rubbish embryo. all this rubbish
amount you intensify makes me feel uncomfortable. Let me have my check
back.

I was looking for a side by side on craigs list and had something similar happen. 2011 John Deere 4X4 with 96 hours for $2000.  I had nothing better to do so I played.  Advertised in Iowa, but was a Utah number.  The number listed was a text number and when I contacted it got the reply "Yes my neighbor still has it for sale, please email the following"  Shipping was free because "had a buyer not get financing in your area and shipper will not refund shipping cost"  (keep in mind I didn't tell her where I was located).  Sent me a PIN number that didn't match the product, and kept asking me for my name and address and phone number "so I can get shipping arranged".  I told her I had friends in Utah and they would just come and pick it up. 
Both the phone number she supplied to "text" and her email address was silent as a cricketless night.  I kept pushing and acting desperate but to no avail.

Keep in mind, all anyone needs to start to steal your identity is your name, address and phone number.  DO NOT GIVE IT OUT UNLESS YOU ARE 100% SURE.

But, I will say, it was fun to play cat and mouse and if I had gotten any other info on them, I was going to turn it over it over to the attorney general.  If everyone reports these, maybe they will slow down.  But I still have to shake my head thinking someone must fall for these since they keep doing them.

I usually get a lot of scam txts from craigslist and always respond back hurry and get me the money, I have a cash buyer on his way, hurry!  I usually text later back asking if their car broke down.
