Big question. Embryos!

so. I want to have really good cattle but I do not have the money to go buy 20,000$ cattle.  So I wanted to buy some really really good embryos. I have narrowed it down to either Angus or clubby embryos. I just want to know y'all's opinions on what embryos I should get, Angus or clubby? I like both breeds. (I know clubby is not a breed but I hope u know what I mean) I just want to have really good cattle. And I'm trying all I can to get involved and take the next steps. And if you do have an answer to the clubby vs Angus embryos, do you have a cretin recondition? like a really really good mating? I have found pros and cons to both breeds . I just want to hear some opinions. Thanks all!!! I know this is kind of confusing and a lot to ask but i hope someone understands.

You definitely have the right idea in mind. I would definitely say to go down the clubby route (you will be able to get much more bang for your buck). The barrier to entry in the angus breed is higher than any breed and in order to buy some of the best/most consistent genetics those eggs can get very pricey. Also its much easier for a smaller breeder to get what the calf is worth out of a cross bred animal in compared to a angus sired animal.

When selecting embryos the first thing you need to look for is cow families and consistency. There are a lot of cows out there that get flushed after one hit and the consistency just isn't there. Consistency is what makes you money. I would try and find something with high chi influence. You can mate those animals many different ways (angus, simmy, clubcalf for steers, char etc.) and their offspring will still always still have enough chi in them to show the chi division as well.

ok, thanks you!!! like my first choice would be Angus but i like clubbies too. and when u say $$$ for really good Angus embryos, how mush are u talking? do u have a specific cross/mating u like for clubbies?

You say you want good cattle.  Good cattle at doing what?  Show cattle, producing great beef, or maybe being profitable in the commercial end of the industry?  Maybe you have identified your goals, but your goals should guide your selections.  Good luck.

Just go buy some you think are good, try some bulls and see what you get.

You will be disappointed until you put your selection pressure on them.

I like the way you are thinking on the embryos young fella!!  Good for you.

You like show steers, and you like cattle shows.  Go with club calf genetics!

Embryos on Snow sale in Denver is a great place to start.  You will find embryos there that are absolutely proven donors.  Sure they are going to cost a lot of money, but they are also much less risky.

I would encourage you to do your homework on the recip cow side of the equation as well.  It takes a damn good recip to raise a really good calf.  I know she isn't lending any of the genetic makeup, but ask anyone that knows...it takes a really good recip.

Here is another idea for you.  Hit up some of the bigger producers.  There are probably some within a short distance of you.  Tell them what you are wanting to do, and what you can bring to the table.  You may find someone that will cut you a whale of a deal with the understanding that they get the second pick (you of course would get first chance) of the calves.

If you want to do leg work and study a pile of genetics there are some very good buys available. Ck with embryo centers to see who may have embryos for sale. Know the genetics well enough so that you know a bargain when offered. Search the Angus website for available embryos.

I have had way better luck buying the embryos I want privately than through a sale.  When you start calling guys about embryos it gets them thinking about stuff they may have forgotten they had.  You can also get some pretty good "basket" deals.

I'd have to agree with Knabe, a lot of the high sellers are artificially inflated and don't accurately reflect what the animals are actually bringing.  That $50,000.00 heifer probably has a lot of conditions and usually has money being returned to the buyer in my past experience.  Raising and selecting good recips is half of the battle with embryos.  Those cows have to awfully good to drop $1,000.00 dollar eggs in and they should be fed and cared for as good or better as anything in the herd, should never be just some cheap sale barn cull cow.  I would think that buying a few good cows and breeding them to carefully selected bulls would pay much higher dividends than just throwing in the flavor of the month.  I'd rather sell all of my calves for a decent price than just hoping for one high dollar one. Just my opinion.
