I just wanted to see what everyone thought of this county fair steer. He just won Reserve at our county fair and we grabbed a quick pick by the cattle barn. The steer that beat him was black 1300, a good not great calf, but not near the mass or structural correctness this guy has-- he should have smoked the doors off the Champion. Is this another Black vs. Red thing we just witnessed? This steer is a Sunseeker and weighed 1290 and 51.5 inches and walks like a cat. I guess some judges cant take their eye off black cattle for very long can they?

Thank,
Craig

i know this is going to sound funny, but have the judge look into the sun next time, just like the picture is and maybe he will think he is black too.  dang fine looking steer.  looks great fitted, looks happy.  he looks kinda long and has some volume.  show cattle psaw.  good job. i'll bet you there are some blacks behind this steer.  perhaps it was appropriate cover that did it for the judge.  did you feel  the other steer and compare it to yours?

whether red or black everyone really needs to remember the every show champion is just one person's opinion on that one day,  we show red and get beat by better blacks and we have seen good reds beat good blacks.  When you pick a car to buy its just your opinion on that day, do ever worry that the other cars might feel shortchanged??  of course not.  I've never seen a calf who came in second walk around the barn and complain he was cheated, unfortunately I've seen alot of "adults" do just that.  We are in the middle of show season and I hope I can smile at whatever the results are when my daughter pulls her feeder into the ring in 2 weeks.  We all need to remember the prayer of being a good sport.

can congress do something about this blatant discrimination and make all cars the same color, size etc?  oh wait, that was nazi germany.

the boiled frog method is alive and kicking.

The calf in picture is red....... on the orignal screen change the angle of your screen and you can see the red tint.... I changed the contrast in the photo so you could see a little better

Do you know what was on the cows side of this steer?  He looks GREAT.  I bet a lot of us would like to have ourselves on the end of his halter.  I was thinking of buying a few straws of Sunseeker.  I am now not thinking, but doing!  This photo could close a lot of deals.

I had several folks tell me my son's steer ( r/w shorthorn) should've been 5th Overall at the Futurity but, he wasn't. Guess what color the 5th place one was ? There was already one non-black in the top 5 so he was the odd steer out. CONSPIRACY ??????? ;D

Of course! :DLOL  so mych more mild tempered, imo better qualitys for breeding and eating, ect. so idk why black is better ::).  But its always going to be an arguement  (argue). I dont believe in "once you go black, you never go back"

I just have to jump in on this one!  We've been under the 'black vs red' for a long time.  Even had a judge remark in a production steer contest that "...even if he isn't black, he's a darn good steer.." then picked the black one.  We've also dealt with the Certified Black Angus beef nonsense -- the hide color doesn't make the meat better.  What needs to happen is to train our current and future judges to understand what works in the real world -- then perhaps the show world and the production world can move closer to a middle ground.

My county fair was just won by a red steer.  We also had a really nice hereford steer that had won every jackpot around that placed third in its class, so it seemed like the judge was more influenced by breed than color.
