What type of services does Bonham provide?  What does it cost?

Do they get a steer ready and you just show up and show?  Or do they have the facilities (such as coolers and all the equipment) for people that don't want to put the investment into getting a steer ready?

SERIOUSLY?????
First of all why do it if someone esle does the work for you?  What do you get out of that or what are you teaching your kids?  "I have more money than you"

Get a goldfish and stay home!

Second if you give Bonhams that kind of money you will be treated like royalty.........  If just purchasing a steer they will cash your check and say see ya!  Unless you happen to win and then they will be there like they know you sayin cheese for the picture!!!!!!

lol... unfortunately I think a LOT of kids are doing just that!  The steer jockey sells them the animal, and takes total care of them until the show.  Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but also because the condition of the steer reflects on the seller.. and there are times when the calf looks it's best the day they load it into the trailer.

Steve can provide anything and everything you can imagine. You pick the services, and he will quote you a price.  Pricing is fair, and the quality of service, outstanding.

I don't need his services I am from Canada and wont be showing any steers in the States any time soon with the COOL rules in place.  I just wondered how the steer shows work in the US  when it say in a lot of pictures" show by" then" raised by".  I could see someone giving a lot  of service to a person that "buys" a steer for 15,000+.  For the number of big money calves that are sold down there the must be a lot  of money lost or not traded until a steer wins.

What would make you single Bonham out?  He and his crew are arguably the best in the Tex/Ok region over the long term, but there are several others just as good elsewhere in the US.

Why is someone from Canada taking speculative potshots at someone you obviously don't know.  The question about how much is fine, the comments aren't.

But to answer part of your speculation, our shows down here are too tough for anyone to buy it.  Almost all of the kids that consistently win are doing plenty of it themselves.  You cant show good enough without spending time yourself with an animal.

As much as it amazes me sometimes, there is that much money in TX and OK.  They really do cost that much.

I am not singling Bonham's out  I just seen their names on the Denver Steers  I just wondered how it works in the States.  I am sure there are other people offer the same services.  I am not taking shots at them or any one just want to under stand how it works in the States.  I have never been to an American steer show and wonder how people pay big money for steers but there is only one winner.  We don't see that kind of money in Canada.  I guess I am just an outsider looking in and am curious.  Sorry if I have offended any one.

You are wrong there about just selling.  At times, Bobby Maddox has helped plenty of folks with the raising part and worked directly for folks on that end.  He helped get us started on the raising side in the mid 90s.  Bonham used to (and may still be for all I know) partners with a guy name Ron Bailey who raiaed plenty of them.

It's hard to raise cows when you are on the road all the time as an auctioneer, finding calves, or going to shows.  But dont think for a second that either of them dont know how to do it or that they couldnt if that's the side they wanted to focus on.

I'm not a customer of them, but know them well enough to have a WHOLE lot of respect for their abilities.

Steve and Ron haven't been partners for quite awhile now.

The Bonham crew (among many others) does indeed do what they do very well, I agree completely. And they (again among many others) can do just about anything to do with show cattle, not just buying, selling and clipping.

But I think more to the point of the original posters question - yes, some show steers here in the states may never leave a traders barn.  Much more commonly, they do go home with the exhibitor until some point (like say the final 30 or maybe even 90 days before their terminal show) when they go back to be fine tuned (cool room, etc...).  Usually the exhibitor still spends some time with the steer regularly (maybe even daily if time/distance allows).  Yes, in most cases this is against the rules of the shows, but when you look at how much time the exhibitor still might spend caring for the animal, the amount of time it's actually away from the exhibitors home, and so on, it manages to become enough a gray area that it's really hard to do much about it.  Whether we like it or not, it's something we have to deal with, so we do.

I have bought cattle from Steve for several years.  We keep our cattle at home.  Everyone at Bonham's has always been extremely helpful in everyway.  They help us with trimming, fitting and everything that goes along with showing cattle.  We certainly don't spend huge amounts of money but they always are very available to help.  I totally recommend doing business with Steve Bonham and all of his crew!

The way you phrased it seems like your wanting to stir trouble, even though you say your not.  This group has a good reputation as far as I've heard.  Why create an enemy when you don't need one?

I have to disagree, he's from Canada, I can see why he is asking this. The show industry is not as big (developed) up there. Nothing wrong with his question. The problem lies within the other posts in response to his question that are complaining  bring in the this isn't fair bs.

FWIW (not in response to any particular post), I think Bonham has his stuff together, and it shows. They know cattle, and they know how to get them at 12 o clock. If people have a problem with this, seems to me they need to figure out how to do it to the same degree, not sit around and B**** about it. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think it matter much the size but if a kid can hook up with a knowedgeable outfit it sure makes the showing process a lot more rewarding.  It has been a few years, bu my daughters bought steers from a retired county agent who was always there to help with feeding and fitting questions and problems.  I am still no expert but I try to help the kids who buy from me whenever I can.  Bonham is just doing the same thing of a bigger scale more successful scale.

Certainly not saying anything bad about Bonham or any other steer jockey. They do make it a lot easier for buyers to go to a place and look at a large group of calf of quality. They will have cattle to most any price range at one place. At Bonham, 95% of their calves are on consignment. With that being said, they will help the buyer in any services that they may need. They do not just sell the calf and say "see ya". Will you pay more there? Maybe, but again, it can eliminate numerous miles on the road looking for good calves.

I've never dealt with him, nor have I met him, but he definitely has a reputation for placing quality cattle with quality feeders. I have friends that buy at least 1 calf a year off of him, and obviously they are happy with what they get, because they keep going back. I would just about bet that if you were a customer of his, and had a problem or question, he or his staff would attend to you like youwere THE most important person to them. As for me and the people I deal with, our motivation is to compete against the Bonham's of the world, and try to beat them. <rock>

I am not sure where you get your information, but I can quarantee you that is not the way Bonham does business.  There has not been a major show in Kansas in the past 10 years that I know of that Travis Otterstad was not there helping someone, even at no fit shows where he can't touch the calf.  I can also tell you even the kids that keep the calves there still go down and work with them.
To answer the original question Bonham Show Cattle offers a full line of services, they have calves in ever price range and will help with whatever you need.  They are very good at what they do and probably have more winners than anyone in the club calf world.  They command a price because they can back it up with past performance.
