I recieved an emai from a company in Canada promoting their new pregnancy detection test kit called BoviPreg.  You just place either urine, blood or milk on the test strip and results are known in five minutes.  The test can determine pregnancy in as little as 18 days post insemination.  Has anyone in Canada or elsewhere had any experience with this product?

Unlike the BioPryn test (which measures a placental specific protein), this test measures progesterone. The test is very aggressively marketed as a pregnancy test, but interestingly they do not respond to questions re the specifics of the test, they provide no sensitivity or specificity (how good the test is at finding pregnant cows and calling them pregnant and how good it is at identifying open cows and calling them open)  and there is nothing in the scientific literature about the test.

Basically it measures progesterone so it would tell you if there was a CL but that doesn't necessarily mean the cow is pregnant - people I know who have used were unhappy when the cow was ultrasounded pregnant and tested open and vice versa - don't waste your time and money

I agree with DL...nothing worse than thinking you have an open cow with an inaccurate blood test, and then hitting her with Lutalyse to bring her into heat.  You most likely just terminated the pregnancy if she was actually bred.  Another thing a blood test won't tell you is how far along the pregnancy is, AI vs bull bred, or the sex of the calf if you want to know.  Check with the veterinarians in your area to see if they offer ultrasound services.  Much more information for you, at still a very affordable rate!

Oh, I have been ultrasounding for the past 5 years.  Very accurate and affordable.  I was intrigued by the claim to an 18 day pregnancy as opposed to 30 days with ultrasound.

I tried this product.  I won't be using it again.  I've had a great experience with BoviPryn!
