The first thing that I would do would to be to put a ring in his nose. It seems once you have a ring in, you have so much more control over the bull.

he's a year old?  and he's not broke?  has he ever had a halter on?

most people generally start breaking them when they are calves...3-6 months...they are small enough to handle then...

I would agree with the ring in the nose. Just remember to give them time to heal

The nose ring is a necessity. My first step would be to tie him up and let him fight it out with a pipe rail. Then I would go in and scratch on him and find what he likes and repeat it over several times. Wash him dry him and build trust first. After that use the ring to build respect.

Thanks for the sugestions I have a ring in him about 2 weeks now, he gets tied up in the morning everyday and brushed and gets rinsed 2 times a week and blown out, still havent touched his ring till it heals a bit more. Also he is in under a fan most days. How much would you feed a bull for show in pounds

Well, we don't break most of our bulls til they're two years old, and the nose ring is the last thing to go in.

A ring is only an 'emergency' precaution... if you have it in from the start, you are liable to become reliant on it. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, us the ring as a means of 'building respect'. That's one way of ensuring the bull won't trust you.

Building respect is a thing only used when there is danger for the cattle or to people around. Jerking a bull around by his nose is not at all what I meant. They do respect it no matter what, even if they have never had any pressure on it. Making them trust you first is very important, a timid or scared bull is not good as they can be the ones that are classified as mean. Any bull will get testy around other bulls, like at a show, and if they don't you might wonder about them.

Thamks The ring thing makes sense to use later as a respect and control thing but not to break him, what would you guys feed a bull in pounds per day weighs roughly 1250-1300 now is end of March 5.6-6 frame, what should he weigh for a show in August
