I agree - I think he probably had pneumonia - and the antibiotics took care of it - but the resultant damage and his asthma is why he has a hard time breathing
If you think it is the beat pulp then it is worth stopping it and see how he does - from your description of what the vet said - he will never be "normal" but you may see him get better - you might want to count how many times he takes a breath per minute and look at how he breathes - how hard does he seem to be working? does he scarf his food or top to breathe? and then see how he does after you stop the beat pulp
I would also make sure he is perfect in term of minerals - get him a crystalyx brigade 60 pound tub - minor deficiencies in selenium and vitamin E (and other stuff as well) can make it harder to fight off things - also talk to your vet re vaccinations - make sure he is well vaccinated and maybe even to the TSV-2 before a show (intra nasal resp vaccine)
with any chronic disease (of which asthma is one) he will be "more fragile" than those without a chronic disease - that's why they always have vaccine for the people with chronic conditions
