We bought a meyer 734 x commercial angus bred heifer. She was bred to Who Made Who and had a 110lb heifer calf that we lost due to hard labor. Any suggestions on what to breed her to next year?

That is very unusual but unfortunate for Who to throw one quiet so large. Although, I have a freind that every year his Who calves are the largest and the growthest of his group. So, you know something in the Who Made Who bloodlines are clicking with your gals bloodlines to produce big birth weights. I would steer clear of any Who blood. I would try the angus option or calving ease option like Ali or another bull. But it can be bad luck or genetics. If she has another monster on the second calf with a calving ease bull that may be her birthweights. Stinks to loose one. Better luck next go around.

what about chill factor?

perhaps its not the genetics of the heifer, the bull, or the combo.. that made such a large calf.  Remember 1/2 the BW comes from the mother, 1/2 from the sire.. and about 3/4 of it from the enviroment...  This discussion has been made on here 1000 times.. do a search.

Meyer 734 is no easy calver by any means. Most of mine will throw big calves. I would maybe go with a easy calving simm or maine and hope for a heifer to keep you want a sure thing this year. Then for her 3rd calf you should be safe to AI to about anything. I really like my TNT ever ready son on my meyer cows, ended up keeping back every heifer out of him this year and that was his first calf crop.

we just had a GVC Macerick bull calf that was 83 pounds.  Gorgeous calf....those genetics might work with your Meyer

Master of Puppets would work great on that Meyer female. He is a full bro to Monopoly!

Semen through Champion Drive Genetics or Cattle Visions at only $25 a unit.

If she had a 110# calf out of WMW, I would hold off breeding her to a Heatwave son for at least another year or two.
