I have a few red angus and black angus cows. I am wondering if I can breed the red angus cows to a black bull and reg. The calves that I get in each breed assoc. Of the color they come out.
Catagory 1B is designated for the % cattle. Catagory3 is for animals with non characteristic traits - ie black hide. Catagory 2 is for animals that have white in front of the navel. Catagory 2 and 3 cattle can produce 1A progeny, 1B's can not. RCRwiredangus said:If you put a Registered Black angus bull on a red angus cow and the resulting calf is black it is registered as 100% angus and put in category 2 because it has a category 1 disqualifier being black hided. The calf will however be a red gene carrier and any resulting offspring that comes out red will go right back into category 1. I believe category 3 cattle are reserved for x-bred like Simmental X Red angus, Hereford X red angus etc...and they can never be "bred up" to the category 1 because they will never be back to 100% angus.
If your black cows are carrying the recessive red gene, approximately 1/2 of those calves will be black and 1/2 red when bred to a Red Angus bull. The black cows that do not carry the recessive red gene will all have black calves. Those black calves will all carry the recessive red gene and be eligible to be registered as catagory 3 red angus. Any red calves born out of your black cows and a Red Angus bull will be eligible to be registered as 1A Red Angus and be eligible to show in any Red Angus show. RCRdogger said:Just to be sure.... If I breed my reg black angus cow to a red angus bull, one half the calves will be red ? And the red calves are elgible to be 1a reg red angus that can show at any red angus events ? The black bided calves from this mating are elgible to be reg in the red angus assoc as 1b or 1c category ? Thank you for the help.

The black association does not recognize any Red Angus genetics in their herd book. Short answer - NO. RCRdogger said:What about a reg black angus cow to a red angus bull. Does the American black angus assoc. Reg. These cattle and allow them to show.
