Bull libido problems

I turned out a 18 month old bull that I just bought. I haven't camped out down there watching him but I think something is wrong. He will sniff and mosey around cows but he acts uninterested and I have never seen him jump up on a female in heat. I wonder if it hurts him to mount? I remember 40 years ago dad had a bull that had a sore on his weiner and he bred no cows. He's the only bull in with 20 head. I guess I am thinking about turning in another bull. Maybe I could dna test calves later. Any past experiences?

I really want to use him but I don't need open females. Maybe I could give him testosterone or something.

It definitely could be an issue from something causing him pain when he try's to breed something. But I have seen some bulls that you just can't ever catch them breeding anything. They breed the cow once then never pay her any more attention.

I've seen this too.  In fact the bull I am using now is a lot like that.  The bull I used previously would mount and hunch as often as possible.

Someone's bull was never observed serving a cow.  However, that bull sired a full calf crop, born on time, with him working evidently only at night?  Or did their bull just wait until his owner was out of sight? 

Your bull is young, but some old bulls serve each cow only once.

It's such a touchy deal when you only use one bull. I always wondered about genetics.......does a bull ever have sex deviations of chromozones.

For example. Turners syndrome and Klinefelters syndrome in people.

What is heat detection method.

How many heat cycles recorded on same cow after exposure.

I generally calve 80% in 45 days. That's my worry.

Had one do that last year with yearling bull batting clean up.  Cows always seemed settled during July.  Beginning of August saw a different one in heat about every day.  Pulled another bull from the heifer pasture and put him in to salvage the operation.  Luckily most were stuck to AI, but will be calving 7 head for the next month that will be two months behind the rest of the herd.  Put another bull in and at least see if the competition makes him more active and make sure he is getting there.

Yesterday the bull was showing a little more excitement rounding a heifer that wouldn't stand. She probably wasn't quite into standing heat yet. I guess I'll probably give him a chance.......keep watching him. The pasture is 6 miles away and you almost need a 4 wheeler to get in there.

Man hate to hear that— only way to tell prior to a blood test is write down heats and see if they’re coming back in.    YY Cartwright was a bull that always scared me as he was a nocturnal breeder- worry to death about open cows but sure enough they all calved.  With a young very fat bull it could go either way.  I’ve got an Alamo son I’ll send you if you need some back up  (thumbsup)

Bull I bought from Marty. I think I will give him at least 20 days. Then I got an extra bull that will work half way decent. Thanks anyway.
