BULLS AT STUD

I looked over One & Only pretty dang hard, and thought he was a really good bull!  I did not notice anything wrong with his head, and if I remember right he is like an Oct born fall bull.  I hope the owners don't mind, but here are a couple candid shots from this week's trip down to Nichols.  His head looks good to me!  He's a maturing bull that should have some age differences over those young April bulls that are at stud.

the mudd on his legs skews your mind how much bone is actually there, he's bigger boned than what he looks in that picture...... really like the 2nd picture by the way

I shot a LOT of pics of various bulls...that way I can go back and look at the real deal, after I get slightly numbed up to the glossy pro shots!  I didn't intend to shoot pics to pass around, and present them in their best pose, but rather a few shots of the important areas that one needs to see.  I really liked One & Only, and I'm an angus guy!  I think the couple pics of him showed how nicely he has matured and people may appreciate that.  I think more people need to spend some time and see these bulls at stud if you are serious about the business.  I know they look great fit to the hilt with the Denver sun shining on them, but after you get them home and put them to work, you may see them in another light!    I have some pics of some very popular bulls that I thought looked horrible, and out of respect of their owner's I have no intention of sharing them.  The bulls are around the Midwest (and other places) so just take some time to do your homework.  You will thank yourself in the long run...

PS  And another bull that I thought looked great was DR WHO...he is OLD and has held up well.  Many of these will never see that age...

I was down there a month ago and thought one and only looked very good.  Only concern on him is hair for show cattle.  but he is double clean.
Also thought hollywood looked very good for a mature  bulll.  Was very sound.
Dr Who had a hard time getting around when i was down there.  Looked like he may have gotten hurt breeding cows.  But have seen him in the past and he got around fine but wasnt getting around the best at all a month ago.

OK...here's one more pic!  Pretty sure the owners of this guy aren't on the message board, so hope not to offend them!  He is a 10 year old bull (we'll call him Max) and is about 30 inches tall!  Big disappointment!!    He will moderate them though...    Probably won't add much muscle, performance or hair!!  O0

We were told a Dexter...and that they were selling semen on him for $75 a straw!!  Guess I'm in the wrong business!!

So back to walks alone how is he structually and how does he look when he's not all done up

Not to change the posts subject but knabe, what does an extre vertabrae effect and is it a pro or con?

the meat that would come from an extra vertebrae isn't bottom round.  the con would be there would have to be more scrutiny for strength of top.

there is one angus line out of wye's that has an extra vertebrae.

He reminded me of an iguana...extremely slick, lizard front end, 4 legs out on the corners and kind of moved with a swagger.  He is extreme in a lot of areas I thought, and very moderate in stature.  That will tell you how to mate him up properly I guess.  Matt Lautner mentioned him on his blog the other day as well... http://mattlautnercattle.blogspot.com/2010/05/our-evaluation-of-last-years-new-bulls.html Hope that helps!

I remember Thriller, Hangover, Copyright, Walks Alone and Eye Candy all in the same spot of the one barn.  If Northern Ice was there, I overlooked him or missed him.  Sorry...

Do you have any more pictures of bulls that were at the stud "Good or Bad".  I like some of the bulls that you mentioned but never seen them in person and would like to see what they look like in their "worken clothes". Thanks

Looks like a real bull instead of fur ball.  I still think they ought to advertise more mature photos of these bulls when they look like that.

I was at both studs on Saturday. Eye Candy and his son Nasty Habit looked great. EC was in a big pen and travelled really nice. Walks Alone also looked good. A couple of the new bulls looked really rough after they spent a month or two at the stud. Sometimes there isn't much meat under all that hair. The HW clones 11, 12, 13  looked good. Sound and in really good condition. Not much for nuts though. The most impressive bulls were at Nichols. Stands Alone, The Gift, Special Edition, Black Powder, Walks on Water all looked great. The Gift is really thick and cool looking. Another bull that really impressed me is the sim bull A Cut Above. Looks much better in person than his picture. Very correct and gentle as a dog.

I agree.

I think that some (not all)of the bulls kind of fall appart as they mature.

Personal Opinion-

If we use an unproven bull and have bad results we don't go back. Why not show the bulls both fixed up and natural. I prefer natural. there is a place for a variety of bullls. Just because they are not the most massive boned etc doesn't mean they won't work. I have enjoyed seeing mature pics that have been surfacing on some of the club bulls. Some of them have really stood the test of time. A foot of straw and hair can really make a ford pinto look like a mercedes benz.
