txshowlamb,

First of all I am not a vet and I know nothing about parasites or 'worms' in Texas. I live in Ohio.

I don't think any of us will be able to help you without seeing and feeling this lump. Is it changing size, is it encapsulated (in a sack), is it warm to the touch, is it hard or soft, etc.,etc?

I have not seen a warble in years, but I have only seen them on the top line of a bovine. Not that it couldn't be a warble on the side, it's just that I have never seen one there. Flies lay eggs on the calf and then the little critter migrates to the spine. When the weather begins to warm up, the little critter migrates back to the skin and the warble comes out through the skin. (I think). Since it has been so warm for so long in Texas, I doubt you are dealing with a warble. While the little critter is in the spinal area is when you do not want to use a dewormer.

You might be dealing with an abscess. Could be there is foreign material under the skin; splinter, thistle or a million other things.

It might be local trauma from your calf bumping into something.

In a nutshell, I guess I am saying if you have any questions or doubts, call your vet.

Good luck with you calf and I hope all is well.

Hey BCCC,

Not sure why you highlighted my post. At first reading I thought I had spelled warble wrong. So, I am just confused.

If it is bigger than a gum ball it is  NOT definitely an abscess. A cyst can be huge or a little bugger. That's why I asked about this bump being encapsulated.

You do not 'remove' an abscess...you drain it. You 'remove' a cyst.

I am not trying to start something or be 'word picky'. Just wondering.

I am sure you and I were both just trying to be helpful.

Malinda, I think he highlighted it because he couldn't think of the name warble & you gave him the name.

I agree on the abscess, drain it but make sure every thing  is sterilized.

Thanks Red. That makes sense. My two remaining brain cells got separated there and I couldn't get the point.

ok so let me get this straight u drain abscess and remove a cyst
Yes with abscess you wash them off spray them with some iodine, and take a sterile scalpel and slit the abscess open, some puss/blood(very little though) may come out, but normally you have to push on it to get the puss to come out, and then after you get it all out, you take a syringe filled with Iodine and flush it out, and then spray the out side with Iodine again, and you are done.

I am not sure how you go about removing a cyst.....
