buying show cattle with the promise of registration papers to come

You know what ticks me off? Buying a club calf that is promoted as being registered Maintainer, low percentage Chi (or whatever) but then having trouble getting the registration papers after the sale (regardless of if it was private treaty, online, phone bid-off, or whatever)!

I realize that sometimes this takes a while, but I paid for a calf with papers, so WHEN DO I GET THE PAPERS?

The worst is when you purchased a calf from someone who purchased the calf from someone else. You don't know if the hang up is with the original breeder, the person that you purchased the calf from, or the breed association!

Yep, been down that road before.
Never again if I can help it-- I have pretty much decided to only buy from people I know for the papered stock. 
In my situation-- ended up enlisting the help of the local sheriff....

I bought a bull on line about 3 years ago.  I never, ever received the registration papers.  The good news, well, maybe bad news, was the bull was nowhere as good as he looked on line.  He was so bad I never used him, so I didn't need the papers anyway. 

Usually, if you don't get your papers immediately, the breeder just simply forgot it.  A phone call will often do the trick.  I know that has happened to me, both ways.

I've texted...more than once.

Does this happen often? I guess that I assumed that "We will get papers to you" meant exactly that (once I provided the necessary info like name and address)!

That stinks OAKVIEW! Our neighbor goes to a bull sale in Nebraska every year. He has purchased bulls for us from the sale a couple of times, after we talked to him about lot numbers and price. He has never yet come home with the right bulls. Worse yet- the ones we get are terrible and way too high for the quality that they are! I think that he is purposely trying to screw us over...or perhaps he doesn't really know good cattle??!

Once, when trying to build a program, I made a deal for a herd sire and 4 sons. The sons were supposed to be sound and 'ready to go'. I told the guy from Kentucky I was going to use them on 100 head. He assured me they were good size for a yearling and could do the job. When they arrived, the herd bull was crippled and the biggest of all the 'yearling' bulls was maybe, and that's a fat maybe, 800#. The smallest looked like he was just weaned and weighed maybe 650. After a year an a half and a ton of feed...only one bull was worth a hill of beans. Never saw papers on anything. Got maybe two calves from the whole deal. Now the jerk is promoting a son from my bull.

Long story short, there is really only one breeder from Kentucky who markets Maine's heavily...don't buy anything from him, or you'll end up in a similar place...substandard animals and no papers.

I have heard too many stories to pay for anything on a promise.  I will give them the check, when I get the papers.  And while it might be considered harsh to some, I certainly will NEVER do repeat business with ANYONE who screws me over, so that neighbor would have never bought bulls for me "again". 

5PCC - You might try and call the association and explain the issue.  They might be limited on what they can tell you, but most of the time they will clue you in if the person is a habitual offender, has a bad history, or if it is an issue with the paperwork. 
I know the red angus assoc will put accounts on "hold" and not allow any new registrations or transfers to take place if they breeder is behind on paying the assoc.

most times it goes back to who has been paid for what even on cattle traded for other cattle

Very similar thing happened to me. Had a show this past weekend that I was told I would have them for and that they would get me papers. (I even asked if I needed to pay and they told me no). After a lot of phone calls and texts I finally got papers on the one after I had to pay Fed Ex and am still waiting on the other heifer. Bought from a very well known clubby guy that is advertized on this sight.  Very discouraging!!
