My daughter showed her steer for the first time yesterday. This was his first show and hers. At home he is great- we work him everyday, he's tied up for several hours at different times, etc. Yesterday he got spooked three times in the ring and got away from her. She got him back under control and did fine afterwards- she won her class and was very close to getting reserve. What can I do to help him be more calm in the ring? Granted, there was a ton of stuff going on and it was all new to him- pigs, goats, lambs all showing in the next ring- tons of people, etc.
We've used calf calm before (not with him) but I've been wondering about the peace pellets or melatonin- can anyone share their experiences? I know a lot of it was it was his first time- we plan on hauling him plenty more times before our county show in March. Any suggestions are welcome! I just don't want her getting f discouraged because he gets spooked and gets away. He's 848 lbs and she's only 8- although she did her best to hang on everytime!

Melatonin, start with 30mg and see if it helps, only way to find out is start him a week before the show giving him his full dose at each evening feeding. If he acts up when you get there up it 15mg's.
Take calf-calm, if he still seems a little edgy hit him with it in the morning of the show, if anything it will help your daughter, sometimes the kids get a little edgy as well and if they think the calf is going to be calm they relax as well.

I would pick up the 3mg tablets at Walmart, find the brand on sale 2 for one. Make sure you get the 3mg tabs there are several different doses the 3 is easy to dose out. We used it for hair growth as well and it was easy to bag the right dose and have it ready for each time.

Hope that helps.

I don't know anything about it but I know a family that used an essential oil, they put a couple drops on the nose and it worked very good for them. I don't remember the exact essential oil but I will try to find out. Maybe someone else on here has used it.

We know several families that use the essential oil on their calves and works well.  We have been using them in our house for our overall family health and our just starting to use them on the calves we show.    If interested message me and we can discuss in more detail what might work for you.
