Are you aware that Micotil can kill a human if inadvertently injected into a human and that an experienced cattleman died after an inadvertent injection? And you would recommend it for a calf you haven't seen?

Micotil and humans

Stick yourself with a needle that had/has micotil= severe chest pains in minutes...call the ambulance to come immediately, they might save you.

Inject any micotil into yourself= call the ambulance to come get your body you'll be dead by the time they get there. 

Pretty nasty stuff! My vet(and boss) is pretty reluctant to sell micotil, usually just sells by the dose and we request that the person(especially the older buyers) to call us after they give it.  Most are super nice guys and understand so they will call!

Everytime i mention Micotil to someone its like i they think i don't know what im talking about. Have to go through this whole safety lesson every-time. I'm like damn i know what it does, now give me the shot so i can go administer it. Better safe then sorry i guess.

We buy it by the dose and have only had to use it during cases such as this. Seems pretty simple to me don't stick yourself with the needle. Someone has to give the shot, i guess that just goes with the territory of animal care.

Just take it to the vet if your scared, just that much more time you gotta waste when you could already have someone bringing the shot while the animal is being prepped.
Works like a champ will knock it right out.

You do not have a diagnosis, yet you recommend a potentially dangerous drug to a person you do not know for a calf you have not seen when there are alternatives that have the same bacteriological spectrum (ie they kill the same bugs) and they are safe for humans - and then play the "if you are scared card" - being cavalier about drug use in cattle doesn't make you either brave or smart.

Why is it that everyone comes on here to find out what to do about stuff like this??   If you don't have the experience with some thing like this and don't know how to treat it!!

Most vets don't charge for a phone call!!!!!

Well mine were summer drought pneumonia related so i know what i was treating. So don't presume to think that it is heart disease or hardware either because it would be a pretty safe bet that fluid in the lungs 70%+  of the time its  gonna be some type of pneumonia. Obviously if a person is asking about a potentially life threatening issue they would want to know all the possible treatments. Not once did i say say keep it in the showbox so you can poke yourself with it while looking for the medium blades. All i said was the name of what i use, and that i get it from my vet.
Once again if your scared go to the vet, and don't ask a bunch of cavalier cattlemen for their $.02 cause im gonna tell you. Its not up to me to hold your hand throughout the whole process, READ the info online its everywhere.

Im asking because it is a veal calf that I do not own, inderstandably the owner does not want to sink money into it. This is why im asking on sp, and honestly I have seen some vets do more damage than good at times

Talk to your vet, Draxxin may be a better choice if  determined you have an upper respiratory issue...G-Luck

IMHO if you own animals and you are unwilling to appropriately take care of them - then you should not own them. It is NOT understandable to me that "the owner does not wan to sink money into it" - in fact it is pretty appalling that the owner asks someone who doesn't know and then that person asks a message board - there are specific restrictions on drug use in veal calves - ask your vet

Guess I hit the loaded barrel with this, but never once did I say the calf was in a near death situation or in any form of serious danger. Its a vary faint rasp in his breathing, once maybe every 4-5 breath,.  If I though the calf was risking permanent damage or going to kick the bucket I myself would have called. The calf already was seen by a vet, they come out every other Friday to their farm, where all calves get the once over, including this one. If it was my calf, yes I would have the vet come back out, but, it is not. So guess the moral is, its better to just turn a blind eye, than see if there was an option that the vet might not have considered. I asked because now I can call said vet and say hey you where out at bla bla bla farm this calf that had fluid on its lungs would this be worth a try? Funny thing about drugs they come in this little bottle that usually has writting on it saying oh, I don't know...the holding period. technology's amazing ain't it.  Ho. A vet is not always right, I don't know about you guys but, I have seen vets be absolutely wrong on things. Last year I had two different vets come out and tell me no way would a little bent leg heifer survive, my only option was put her down, or I could risk a $5,000 surgery (one offered this)  that may make her worse. I told them to give me a few days to decide, but that calf wanted to fight. I posted that heifer on here, and talked to a few old farmers. one old guy told me to let that calf be, so we did. last mouth that heifer walked out of a tough class with a 5yr old right smack in the middle of the pack under bob may, so much for something the vets told me to kill that did not have a prayer.  I have also seen vets use farmers ideas, ever seen a cow eat its own teats? vet was talking to me about a cow like that when he was doing a health chart for me, I suggested a grazing muzzle. Come to find out, they ended up using it on that cow, till it worked out its mental issues about having an udder (was told this by my AI tech.) Long story short IDK maybe I hold on to the belief that you can always learn something by ASKING questions... If you hate people asking this on here why go on an obvious thread about it? if your tired of threads popping up, why Be on SP? FYI I will keep asking when I want second opinions because it never hurts to find other opinions or experiences

On a larger note, which, I'm sure ill cause a big argument with this one is: What the heck is wrong with asking others opinions on this forum!

On the micotil, I don't think he said anything about going to get it, he just mentioned that this drug could help. We have used it, are VERY careful with it. It goes without saying be careful around drugs you aren't sure of the human side effects. Obviously it goes without saying that if a person suggests it they have probably used that said drug before so I don't see the reason you jump all over that person, they obviously lived to tell the tale if they are posting on here. If the person asking for help is interested than they can ask and the person giving advice can tell the that person thier expierences with the drug, and all is well with the world.

On the bent legged calf you referred to we had a twin a few years ago that came out a cripple couldn't walk on a hind leg because of how thetwins were laying. Several people said knock it in the head it won't get better but our old farmer neighbor said let it go and it will be alright so we did she had a successful show career and was a cow in our herd for 7years. After a couple of months you could never tell she was ever a criple.

It is too bad that Micotil does come with the risks to humans that it carries. We use it here for respiratory problems. I have had vets diagnose calves as having  chronic pneumonia, treated with Micotil and come right out of their symptoms. That's just our experience over the last several years.

Vets are so used to ranchers giving them heck over price they are sometimes reluctant to prescribe something other than LA200.  Early on, I had to tell ours to quit prescring it - I wanted newer ones that were more likely to work with one shot. 

The other practical problem is that vet med salesman are just as bad as pharm. reps for humans in pressuring or incentivizing vets to use certain products.

So, it is very useful on a message board to hear others talk about "what works on what".  It has personally helped me "ask the right questions" of my vet.

I did learn of the dangers of Micotil on this board.  Used to use it without nearly enough caution.  I still think its the best wide spectrum, low dose antiobiotic out there.  But, I rarely use it anymore.

I learned of Resflor Gold on this board.  Talked to my vet about it (had to ask) and now it is our preferred general antibiotic.  Solves a lot of the controversey over banamine also.

The debate on calling your vet is a moot point- you cant get any of these products except through a vet.  We keep fairly large quantities on hand, but it all gets ordered through our vet.

Its not that fine of a line between offering information and incessant negativity.  This message board is next to useless now.  There are too many repetetive or flat stupid questions, and when there is a valid one - anyone with any actual real knowledge usually doesnt have time to properly qualify every answer which results in the usual tirades against - fill in the blank - sorry club calf genetics, sorry judges, sorry politicians, sorry use of drugs, etc.

I have to argue a bit with this. There is no stupid question, repetitive yes. There are new people coming on here all the time and to answere as a ass to a question will just run them off. There is a polite way of answering or ignoring a question like this. This place lost a lot of credibility when people were banned from being a ass and then knowingly coming back under a different name and then being able to stay. I guess just a name was banned and not the poster.
