Calving Date vs. AI Due Date

I have a cow that was due 2/3 to her AI date (4/26) and didn't calve until 2/16.  She had a bull calf that was about 90lbs. She went in with bull (5/2) a week after she was AIed.  What is everyone's experience with this situation?  She is a hereford cow and both AI bull and cleanup bull are hereford as well.

If your going to register the calf just DNA it. Probably too close to call. I had a cow that was ten days over and have had some go two weeks. All Hereford too

I would agree with DNAing it but at the same time too you could look at the AI bull you used on the cow and look at what his birth weight epd would be. If he is a calving ease bull that threw a 90 pound bull calf i would say it is probably the AI bull being 13 days late. If the herd bull is one you have had around for a while you should have an idea of what his birthweights look like and would be able to have an educated guess if he would throw a 90# bull calf 8 days early. Again i would suggest DNA testing but at least it would give you something to think about (clapping)

I have a question somewhat related to this.  With due dates, what has your experience been as far as a % of calves that come over 1 week early versus those that come within one day either way of their due date versus those that go atleast 1 week over?  I have 20 + cows that are due - based on exposure date- starting on the 24th.  They are springing very heavily and, just by looking at them, Id say they could calve any second.  I slept in my truck the last two nights as there is already one cow that is holding her tail to the side as if she's about to go into labor.  Luckily this'll be her 3rd calf and I sure don't anticipate any problems, but with a new bull- I wanna be around the first few births until I find out the size of the calves he throws.  Just looking for other's experiences ...

DNA the calf to remove all doubt. It is not expensive.

When you see a cow with her tail out, and yet nothing happens, and no water bag or placenta comes out, my first thought is a breech calf. Usually the cow will NOT push since nothing enters the birth canal. The cow will lay down, stand up, moo softly, look at her sides and hold her tail out, but will NOT push.  Just something to consider.
