for example, lets take two embryo's in a sale that has the same picture and label it with breeder number 1 that has the highest average sales each year and the other, a smaller breeder.
that calf will have a significant price jump in the sale of the leading breeder.
everyone knows this so they "cattle trade" by putting those animals in pedigrees to attempt to get some sort of premium over their own cattle which may in fact be more consistent, better suited to a life without supplemental feed, etc. this is done to attract buyers who don't want to pay the premium of breeder #1 but still have those genetics and perpetuate the process.
almost everyone knows it and we keep supporting this pyramid scheme.
on the other hand, maybe someone is just starting out, finds animals they like and are just going through the motions of any starting out producer instead of changing breeds every 5 years, maybe they infuse popular genetics every so often.
it's only human.
maybe compare the above scenario with changing breeds often. not sure that's a winning strategy either.
