Did Proud Jazz "dodge the defects"?

Do the Angus people know if there are any old time, real Angus females out there? By that I mean those that don't go back to include the infusion of whatever would blood type from the 70's forward. The Haumont herd of Shorthorns is reputed to be a souce of "native" blood. I'm only asking about Angus because we had a neighbor that had used nothing but what he thought were old time Angus bulls from old time Angus breeders and was surprised when he started getting a few horns, spots, etc.

yes. the person who is going to use the 37t semen is going to in vitro flush a few of these older cow lines and provide some left over sample to jerry taylor. it has already happened with other old semen from early 60's bulls using ET. any more will be in vitro on a couple of bulls. plenty of semen for ai on others. all semen will be made available for genomics studies.

there are those who would say why have slow growing, later maturing, bigger cows and that slower growing animals equals negative cash flow and why bother.

Glad to hear there are some of those lines still around. I don't necessarily think they are better or worse, I'm just happy that someone preserved the genetics. Times and types change over time, sometimes depending on what someone considered an expert says. From time to time, we get stubborn. I have an early 50's era Shadow Isle Angus Farm dispersal catalog. Prince Eric of Sunbeam was their noted herd bull. I think it would be interesting to see the "Ideal" of each era lined up, side by side. Prince Eric of Sunbeam, Canadian Colossal, Great Northern, Sport (speaking of genetic defects), to the present. How about a line up of Bapton Constructor, Glamis Benefactor, Leader 21st, Columbus, Dividend, Rodeo Drive, Trump. Better yet, how about a gathering of NBA point guards: Bob Cousy, Jo Jo White, Gail Goodrich, Earl Monroe, John Lucas, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Jason Kidd, etc.

I picked up on the etc. But if we get to pick I take Steve Nash over Jason Kidd any day.

There has been some discussion of Camilla Chance over on 5BarX. This picture was posted of the grand sire of "Canadian Colossal". It seems hard to find a picture of Colossal, maybe someone has one.

I think the body type of the southaven bull is just what the low input Angus breeders are striving to recover today. Here's a picture of a Craigie bull that is very similar and a Horse Butte bull that is line bred Shoshone Beauigan that seems similar to me. The phenotype rings true to Delamere, a foundation bull from long ago.
Ballot of Belladrum is seeing use again. I have a grandaughter of his and a great grandson crossed up with Wye and Rito out back. Rito 707 is having kind of a revival. There was a Sinclair Dispersal sale in PA last month and their semen inventory was part of the sale. The catalog is on line and the semen inventory section is sort of an encyclopedia of older Angus Genetics.

And even though it is jumping topic, I found a really good example of a curly headed Angus bull, George of Swiftbrook.
