I am showing my ignorance here, but I just have to ask...I showed (mostly heifers) in the 80's and early 90's. For every show that we attended, there was a Champion and Reserve Champion.

My kids are now getting into showing. I have heard others claiming to be winners of Third, Fourth, and Fifth Overall (Breeding Heifer and Market Steer). I am not familiar with this. How are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th placings determined? Is it just based on showring performance? Does the judge pick a Champion, a Reserve, then a third calf, a fourth calf, and finally a fifth calf? Or do other variables come into play...such as rate-of-gain, etc?

Also...for shows that have both MARKET and FEEDER steer divisions...I assume that this is the same as PROGRESS and PROSPECT divisions?

Don't feel bad, I was surprised to see the placings that deep too.

Basically, many states have a Club Calf Association which adopts their own rules.  In addition, they accumulate points throughout the year.  So depending upon the total amount of calves at a show, they may require the judge to place a top 5, 7, or 10 out of the Champion Drive.

Market and Feeder division to me means late summer or early fall shows in which the Market Steers are basically fat, and the Feeders are just babies and maybe still on the cow.

HMMM...I know about Club Calf Associations and points claimed throughout the year...So let's say the State Fair...will they typically pick the top 5 every year...regardless of how many head are there? And how does that work? Does the judge still pick from the first and second place winner from each class to choose from?

Also-I think that the difference between Prospect and Progress is weight...it might be something like those under and over 900 pounds. I suppose that those names can then be interchanged with Feeder and Market then. It just sounds like different names for the same thing.

At the Iowa State Fair, they pick a top 5 from the championship drive regardless of the amount of animals in the show.  To be in the championship drive for breeding you must be either Grand or Reserve champion in your breed or commercial division...not just 1st or 2nd in class.  In the market side, the crossbreds are divided into 3 divisions and the Grand and Reserve of each of those divisions compete with the Grand and Reserves from the breeds to determine the top 5.

Awesome! Thanks. I showed at the Iowa State Fair until the late 80's or early 90's. When and why did they start doing that?

I like this practice, but also find that we might be going down the slippery slope of "everyone's a winner".  God I hate that.

I agree in that I hate the everyone's a winner mentality.  I don't think that's the case here, though - it's more to recognize the depth of quality at a show, IMO.  Here in OK, we pick a top 5 at the prospect shows at both our state fairs.  We also pick a third best in each breed so that a judge can go three deep in that breed if they choose (can't remember that happening, but I can't swear it hasn't).  We also have a third overall (Bronze) in each market animal division at OYE.
