I would say that Knabe should be the President, but then he wouldn't have time to mess around on SteerPlanet with the rest of us and educate us.  It's alot easier to think when he says things...

let me relate a little story from my youth-Uncle Bill served in Korea during war and being thetype of guy he was lived with a Korean family(sortof) while there borought supplies etc as he tells it old poppasan had a puppy followed him everywhere and Poppasan fed him good and he ended up a fat little doggy. One day while they were on a walk Poppasan turn and popped that puppy with his walking stick and returned it to the cook pot! this story didn't just frighten us when we were kids it appalled us-however we lived in a farm family and thats not what we did to pets City people have no more clue about life in our world than we of different ways of life.city people would probably not think too highly of us knowing we name all our show calves and cows and lambs!People where I work have asked me how I could eat an amimal I name(these are people I work with so I am sensitive to their feelings) my humble opinion be easy on these people explain as youcan and dummy up before the arguement!sjcc is right!!

These words might be harsh, but I feel people in production ag (notice I didn't say farming) have brought some of this on themselves.  When someone ask what you do, do you respond "oh, I just farm." or "I farm." or "I raise cows."
That might be what your GOAL is. but that is certainly not what you do. When someone ask me what I do, I laugh and say "well today, I was an accountant, a vet, a chef, and a diseal mechanic. Tomorrow, I will be a psycologist, a marine biologist and a forage specialist."  Get my point??  (clapping)

These city people HAVE NO IDEA. None. Not even a glimmer. It is OUR responsibility to explain to them what we do, how we do it, why we do it that way, and WHAT IT MEANS TO THEM. Yes, it is frustrating, yes it is tiring, and yes, there are a million things I would rather do (including getting my teeth pulled) but, if we wish to continue living our livestyle, then WE HAVE TO DO IT. It is not an option to turn away.

To this person, I would say: We raised this animal with all the compassion and care we could. It has had the best care. But its main goal in life, and the reason it was born, was to supply our growing population with food.  And I have chosen this career because it does indeed take a special person to care for something every day, two and three times a day, and then sacrifice it for the good of the population of this country. But since most people can not do it, then it falls upon the shoulders of the few, of which I am a part. I respect your decision to disconnect from the fact that when you eat anything, someone, somewhere, took care of it FOR YOU.  Since you are not going to change my career, and I am not going to change yours, why don't we just respect each other for our opinions and say good-bye.
I would say it politely, and I would say it with conviction. Getting angry is only going to reinforce her opinion that you are an uneducated idiot.
I have dealt with folks like this at the fair, and it does open your eyes as to how little these folks know, but honestly, how much do you know about THEIR job?

This is an interesting post, with some very interesting comments, answers, and suggestions.  As I ponder what I might add, one point keeps fighting it's way to the forefront; what would Jesus say.  He always referred to the Word of God.  I like what Paul had to say in 1Corinthians 8:8 "But food will not commend us to God: neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better".

We live in a Christian Nation, but have we forgotten the Christ? Here is another quote:
"If we ever forget that we're One  Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under." ... Ronald Reagan

The Looney Tunes are taking over our great USA.  Just take a look at the Democratic candidates for President.  Watch the debates.  You might find that the whole lot will confess to being a Christian, but I'll bet you can't find one that follows the teachings of Jesus Christ!  I don't want to single out just the Democrats.  Take a look around; churches are seeing growth like never before, but how many are preaching "What sayeth the Word of God"?  NOT MANY!!!

Enough of my rant.

wow, i haven't gushed in a while.  as for

"I would say that Knabe should be the President"

i am going to register to run as either a county supervisor or city council member next election cycle in three years in my county.  proabably too much of a challenge without actual legislative experience to run for representative to the assembly statewide.  the planet gives me the opportunity to hone my communication skills, which suffer from not using the readers digest format often enough and has taught me to remove entire sentences and paragraphs.  your local governments serve as a power base for national policy.

as for "what Jesus might say or do", every time I hear this, I think of wealth redistribution and excessive regulation (communism) rather than being a fisher of men and independence.

Not a big fan of either party, and, that's all I was saying. If you put every politician(BOTH left & right) in a plastic WalMart bag, tied the top & shook it up before spilling the contents out onto the sidewalk, they'd all be the same color.

What about the Republicans? They don't seem to be any better than a bunch of Pharisees, either.

I agree.  I'm not a fan of our two parties either, but we must face the fact that our great nation is going down the drain, and politics will have to change if our land is to survive.  The politicians can't handle it, so the "White, Middle Class, Moral Majority" is our only hope. We have to quit being complacent, and stand our ground.  Someone, ANYONE, tell me how positive change can occur without the voice of Christ leading the charge?

When I'm told I'm a hick from the sticks because I eat my pets, I have to respond by asking them if they know what will happen when they die.  Jesus is the Way.  The ONLY way!

aaok,

i feel we are in the melting the gold to make a calf phase waiting for a leader, even despising leadership.  people will not listen until they are ready, and when they are taught to not be ready, well, that makes it more difficult. i agree with garybob about the parties.  it's not that we need new parties, the membership is yearning for turnover.  we basically set up this republic to make it difficult to get anything done, which is a good thing.  we have created to many avenues to get things done too easily, and with the courts aiding this, it's starting to get out of hand.  the other area to address is the courts.  jurors have more power than they know and you are not being informed of your rights by the judge in most cases.  research this.  above all, create a persona where people ask you, rather than evangelizing.  this is my biggest weakness.

This is an opportunity for you young 'uns on here to really pay attention to issues facing agriculture, and, to react. You are our nation's ( with fewer than 2% KNOWING ANYTHING about food production, or rural lifestyles) future leaders. Knabe, you are the most intelligent, resourceful thought-provoking member on this site.  :)

thanks for the compliment garybob.  i'm feeling i can't live up to that.  there are about 30 people on this site who i feel have more of that than i, and for the rest, they are budding.  most of it is that i'm stubborn, and read a little bit.  my dad reads a book every two days, usually two or three at a time.  i read in spurts.  reading is undervalued in the current generation.  you are what you spend your time with, whatever it is, it is what you are, only you can change it.  three books that have changed my life are prodigal genius, nikola tesla, the fountainhead by ayn rand (though i'm not a whatever the randians are) and a book about buckminster fuller titled critical path.  one of my bars to accept any intelligence on cattle is when i make a profit.  there are way to many on this site who have passed that hurdle.

buckminsterfuller quote
(When asked why many of his buildings were designed to be portable): "Trees have roots, people have feet."

OK - I'll be a pill - I don't think that this is really appropriate here - I don't like it when people gang email this sort of stuff to me and I like it even less when it is copied and pasted on the board -I also don' t like the great lump of all humanity into one big preconcieved hunk and  I really don't like to be preached at - JMO and no I am not in a bad mood - if it was under a heading that said what it was I would have ignored it but there it was in my face hard to ignore  :( ???
