Someone said it earlier, but we've had much better luck getting "loud" colored blue roans out of light roans than out of our white animals(bull or cows). Usually our white cows(and our white bull from a few years ago) will throw a predominantly black calf with a roan tail, a few white hairs on the head, and possibly a few white hairs on the body. We've had much better success getting the "blue" color using our red neck roan cows crossed on homozygous black bulls. I guess I might be splitting hairs(no pun intended)--all the offspring from these mating are technically blue roans, but usually people are shooting for the wilder colored ones when they breed for that color. Of course, its always a crapshoot with the roan color(we've had several that were almost totally black) but at least this is what we see in our small herd. I wouldn't be afraid to use a light roan bull either--and there's lots of them out there.
The calf pictured below is a Premium Blend out of a Trump cow. This cow is the color that I like to cross on black bulls to have the greatest possibility of the blue roan color we like. If you look at her close she is roan all over but still maintains some of the darker areas. I'll see if I can find some of our other blue roans to show you as well.
I have to agree with the pro-Vegas group on the Vegas versus Sin City question. Again we have limited numbers, but in our herd and in most of the herds I've looked at over the last several years the Sin City calves seem to get tall and angular looking versus the more moderate framed, thicker calves I've seen out of Vegas. (probably characteristic of the TH gene in most cases) This is generally speaking of course, I've seen a few pretty good ones out of Sin City but not very many considering how much he was used after Vegas was found to be a carrier.

Shortdawg have you jumped your bull? He looks very good. He's one that you may want to put a little in the tank just in case.
No , I haven't jumped him yet. I wanted to see what his calves were like first. He seems to be a pretty consistent easy calver. Helped one heifer with a easy pull (ie no jack) and had one big one out of a 1600 lb recip that was born unassisted - have no idea what she is or her genetics. His calves look really good so far so I might jump him soon. They seem to be really correct, flashy, and sound. He is the soundest bull I've ever owned, good testicles, and a very good breeder. Just got him back off a lease to SKF here on steerplanet - she seemed very pleased with him. I think he will breed similar to his sire and should be used on upper moderate to large framed cattle b/c he will bring them down a score in frame. His name is PLM Blanco if you would like to look him up on the shorty site - he's got clubby shorty genetics for the most part. Thanks for the comments.

He's a Wildside x Vortec- giving you plenty of tommorrow 'outcross' options if you don't have any Vortec. NO Double Stuff, Trump, JPJ, Gizmo, Rodeo Drive, or Venture!! He's a polled, 6.3 frame bull, with excellent color- especially for making blues, of which is a plus!! Dr Feelgood has been used on purebreds of all colors, and crossbreeds of every origin. We have also used him on heifers! Our bull has an excellent front end, a super/ massive hip, on an abundance of stoutness- and it's all coupled together with soundness, balance, and body!
We think Feelgood can sire excellent bulls and heifers. His pedigree wouldn't suggest anything different. Many Wildside females have been winning shows- and competing with the best of em- across the country- and most importantly many breeders can attest that those females will produce too! Wildside himself is an outstanding 9 year old bull- his picture can be viewed on here by doing a search!- I can't attach more than 5 pictures, otherwise, I'd put one on!
Our bull also has many closeup shots of the great Steermaker and Cunia- (both parents are Steermaker grand-offspring). And as we all know Steermaker is one of the only bulls in Shorthorn breed history to sire a National Champion bull, heifer, and steer!
Our bull also has the Steerplanet push- his breeder regularly visits this site, as do I! Also, he's an affordable semen'd bull costing only $15. and certs are also $15.

I've got a new pb white Shorthorn with Abertees that is WAY different.....he's really boxy and small framed....and double clean. He reminded me of the old original Double Stuff.
I wanted something to make steers........something that would counteract the many longer spined, longer headed cows. His name is Rock n Roll Train. He was too young to produce semen to sell his 1st year, but the natural bred calves at Stropes are lookin' good.

I showed his full sister last year and she wasn't all that small. A VERY good heifer though. The Professor cattle are going to work in the purebred and clubby circles, just depends on what you put on the bottom side.

If you'd like, ask them how big Cashmere II was. She was never on the small end of any class she was ever in. She was at least a 6 frame.
