What is the best method for clipping calves that are not yet halter broke.  I ask this because I see so many young calves on here that are clipped out and I have never tried to clip on one that I couldn't at least move a little on a halter.

Do you use a grooming chute, or make due with a squeeze chute.  Any other tips on doing it?

Just curious.

We bought a stronghold clipping chute a few years back one of the best investments ever we run the calves through a time or two and rinse and wash and halter them and clip them after they have been through the chute once. It has also helped save sometime halter breaking as they get used to being handled at a fairly early age.

I've clipped hundreds of sale cattle that obviously aren't halterbroke.

2 year old bulls can be a treat!  ::)

The best chutes for this job that I have seen have an auto catch head gate and gates that swing open on either side, sort of like a giant and ultra heavy duty blocking chute. A decent alley system leading up to the chute amd you've got it made.

I agree with Shady Lane. I've have clipped many bull sales and most of the bulls have been in somebody's feedlot. So you use their hydraulic chute and can't clip where you need to clip. We built a chute like Shady Lane described and it made a world of difference. Like I said in a previous post put a palpation cage on the end and you can use it to AI and preg test. We also use ours after we wean calves to halter in and clip them in.
